Theatre By The Sea owner and producer Bill Hanney, Producing Artistic Director Amiee Turner and Managing Producer Joel Kipper are proud to open Theatre By The Sea's 2009 Children's Festival with Caribbean Carnival Celebration presented by TAINO on Friday, July 10, 2009.

Join Sana and Papo in an exuberant performance highlighting keyboard and congas. TAINO celebrates the Latin American Caribbean music of Guajira, Mambo and Salsa with a little Reggae thrown in! This festive program is loaded with audience participation. Kids and their parents will help create the beat, provide a backup chorus, and join in the music fun from these diverse ethnic origins!

Drawing on her training at Berklee College of Music, and her apprenticeship with renowned instructors Karl Berger and Charles Banacos, Sana has spent over 25 years developing her unique styles of performance and teaching that include improvisational vocal techniques based on Latin and African dialects, polyrhythms and contemporary world composition methodologies. Papo, inspired by West African rhythms, began to develop his unique style of drumming as a young child. At age sixteen, he completed two years training at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA, and consequently began his work as a singer/songwriter exploring the integration of poetic forms in composition. Papo's distinguishing performance talent is his ability to easily assimilate the vast array of world rhythms, his specialty being Afro-Latin-Caribbean percussion. Meeting at the Creative Music Foundation in Woodstock, NY, in 1975, Sana and Papo began the collaboration that would become TAINO.

After the show, families can enjoy cold drinks, pizza and cookies, which will be available for purchase at the gazebo.

Caribbean Carnival Celebration will be presented on Friday, July 10, 2009 at 10:00 am and 12:00 noon. The theatre is located at 364 Cards Pond Road, Matunuck, RI.
