The Gamm to Present 1984, 4/26-5/27

By: Apr. 11, 2012

The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre (The Gamm) will present a new stage adaptation of George Orwell's landmark novel, 1984. British playwright Nick Lane's reimagining of Orwell's dystopian nightmare "comes to life in a stark, futuristic vision with The Gamm's trademark pull-no-punches staging. Gamm Artistic Director Tony Estrella helms the first U.S. staging of this gritty, electrifying script with thrilling multimedia effects that bring home the work's never-ending relevance, including the influence of mass media on daily life."

"With our attentions caught between election season euphemism taking over the sturm und drang of the 24-hour news cycle and the beep, buzz and whir of the portable telescreens we are all carrying around in our hip pockets, it seems like a good time to check in with Orwell's masterpiece to see what he still has to say sixty plus years since its publication," Estrella said. "We couldn't be more excited to bring you the U.S. premiere of Nick Lane's epic, intimate adaptation of arguably the most influential novel of the past 100 years."

1984 runs from April 26 through May 27 at The Gamm Theatre, 172 Exchange St., Pawtucket, RI. Tickets: $34 and $42 (depending on day/time), preview and press performances (April 26-30) just $25. Discounts for subscribers, groups of 10 or more, seniors and students. Tickets at 401-723-4266 or gammtheatre.org.
