The Contemporary Theater Company has released photos of its production of The Moors, a gothic absurdist play by acclaimed playwright Jen Silverman, running May 1 through May 28 at The Contemporary Theater Company in Wakefield, Rhode Island.
Silverman — celebrated for The Roommate, Witch, and Collective Rage: A Play in Five Betties — conjures a world drenched in Brontë atmosphere and dark wit. In 19th century England, two sisters and a dog live out their lives on the bleak moors, dreaming of love and power. The arrival of a hapless governess and a moor-hen set all three on a strange and dangerous path. Love, obsession and a little bit of blood keeps this stylized play darkly funny.
Artistic Director Paula Glen brought The Moors to CTC after a lifelong devotion to the Gothic literary tradition. “My entire high school career I read Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and Tenant of Wildfell Hall over and over to the point of my books actually falling apart,” she recalls. “So The Moors, to me, is full of the Gothic tropes I love and often laugh at — but it gives them a contemporary spin.”
Glen describes the production as a rare opportunity: “It’s not often you can have a queer, absurdist, darkly comedic play with talking animals and maybe a little blood — so when the opportunity arose to do this piece I was thrilled!”
She adds that the production has drawn together an exceptional company of artists from across the state: “The cast and production team is full of amazing theater makers from all over Rhode Island and I feel so lucky that we get to watch them come together and work their collaborative magic on a piece that should make you laugh, think, and maybe even shudder a bit.”
The cast includes Kelsi Canada, EJ Caraveo, Ricci Mann, Riley Neder, Caleigh Pearce, and Steph Traversa, directed by Sonny Wong, with costumes by Madeline England.
