When "M. Butterfly" by David Henry Hwang premiered in 1988, its remarkable story of international espionage and personal betrayal solidified its status as a modern classic. Based on the real-life affair between a French diplomat and a mysterious Chinese opera singer, it blurred the boundaries between male and female, East and West. For the 2017 Broadway Revival Version, Hwang has incorporated new material inspired by details of the relationship that have emerged since the play first seduced audiences. This intoxicating reimagining of M. BUTTERFLY examines the nature of love and the devastating cost of deceit.

The Brookfield Theatre production is directed by Lou Okell with choreography by Nell Walton and fight/intimacy choreography by Pippa Walton. The role of Song Liling will be played by Todd Santa Maria and Miles Everett will play the role of Rene Gallimard. The cast includes Rachel Ames, Kristin Aug, Tony Benedetti, Vincent Chistoni, Andrés Idrovo, Rick Stewart, Sandy Vallati, and Aranka Vitarius. (content warning: nudity, suicide, guns).

Review: M. BUTTERFLY at Brookfield Theatre Of The Arts
September 28, 2025 Theater is vulnerability. You might see am actors on the stage think about their talent, their confidence, or their dedication, but all of that stems from vulnerability. You could of be the best actor in the world, but if you can't allow yourself to be vulnerable on the stage, the you'll always hold yourself back. Nothing was held back in Brookfield Theatre of the Arts‘ production of M. Butterfy by David Henry Hwang.

Interview: Lou Okell of M. BUTTERFLY at Brookfield Theatre
October 06, 2025 When David Henry Hwang’s 1988 play M. Butterfly premiered at the National Theater in Washington D.C. and then produced on Broadway, it was truly visionary, compelling, thought-provoking, and outright shocking. Revised in 2017 to incorporate information that was released after the original play was produced, more people’s acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community, and China’s growth as a superpower.
