Merola Opera Program continues its 2026 Summer Festival with La Tragédie de Carmen, performed at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. This condensed adaptation of Bizet's Carmen, created by Peter Brook, Jean-Claude Carrière, and Marius Constant, presents the story in a raw, psychologically intense form, focusing on the tension between Carmen's insistence on absolute freedom and Don José's obsessive control. The production is led by conductor Stephanie Rhodes Russell and director Mo Zhou, both Merola alumnae. Performed in French with English supertitles, the work unfolds as an intimate tragedy driven by desire, jealousy, and fate.
