William Peace Theatre Hosts THE WILD PARTY

By:

It's the Jazz Age, and a parade of misfits and social outcasts have a party. William Peace Theatre brings the 1920's to life in Andrew Lippa's The Wild Party, November 16 - 19 in Kenan Auditorium in the Browne-McPherson building on campus at 15 E. Peace St., Raleigh.

The Wild Party is a steamy, cautionary tale about recklessness and excess. Set in the Prohibition era, lovers Queenie and Burrs decide to throw a decadent and raucous party in their small, Manhattan party. As the guests a arrive, it seems Queenie is taken with her friend's date, sparking a complicated love triangle. The night, fueled by booze, lust, and pretention, takes a dangerous turn as Burrs's jealousy gets the best of him. Violence erupts. Shots are fired. But who shot who?

This musical is based on the 1928 book-length narrative poem by Joseph Moncure March of the same name. Because of its risqué subject matter that was taboo in the 1920's the poem was widely banned, although despite (or perhaps because of its controversial nature) it was a success for March.

The Wild Party is directed by Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre and Theatre, Amy White. She was last seen onstage regionally in Raleigh Little Theatre's production of One Man, Two Guvnors this February and last year in Stick Fly. She most recently directed Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (2017), The Laramie Project (2016) and directed/choreographed Green Day's American Idiot (2016) for William Peace Theatre. She also recently presented research on the mutual impact of LGBTQIA legislation and the performing arts at The Sorbonne with WPU Criminal Justice Professor, Dr. Elizabeth Kusko. White has worked in professional theatre for over a decade, in New York off-Broadway and in touring productions. She holds a BFA in Musical Theatre with a minor in Dance from the State University of New York at Fredonia, along with a MFA in Performing Arts from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
