“Often playful, but also mournful and even foreboding.”- The Guardian

Boom Arts proudly presents Teatr-Pralnia (Laundry Theatre) with CCA Dakh of Ukraine in their first-ever US tour. This fearless music-theatre ensemble, sister troupe to the international sensation DakhaBrakha, draws on real time events, Facebook feeds, iconic Ukrainian poetry, catchy vamps, and improvised action to bring their audacious, super-charged puppet cabaret production TseSho?/What’s That? to life. Through live music, projections, puppetry, and original text and songs, they ask: How do we understand the world around us? Who can we trust in a world of “fake news,” corruption and propaganda? Can we discern truth from deception? As one ensemble member told The Guardian newspaper: “Our performances are like a mirror of things that are happening… We want our performance to be like an injection for people’s minds.”

Age recommendation: 14+ (21+ on October 20 & 27).

Library presentation:

"Fresh Voices from Ukraine: Meet the Artists of Teatr-Pralnia (Laundry Theatre)"

Tuesday, October 23, 6-7:30pm at Central Library
Presented in partnership with World Oregon, featuring guest Professor Stepan Stimek of Lewis & Clark University..

Taking Kiev -- and the world -- by storm ever since graduating from the puppetry program of Ukraine's national theatre school in 2015, Teatr-Pralnia create fresh, unusual performances that evoke what it means to make art in a constantly changing society. Their multidisciplinary projects are now housed at CCA Dakh, Vlad Troitskyi’s cultural center in Kyiv, also home to the ethno-chaos quartet DhakaBrakha, and performance festival GOGOLFest. No reservation needed. First come, first served.

The presentation of Teatr-Pralnia with CCA Dakh is part of Center Stage, a public diplomacy initiative of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts in cooperation with the U.S. Regional Arts Organizations, with support from the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, and the Trust for Mutual Understanding. General management is provided by Lisa Booth Management, Inc.
