Portland, OR (June 10 - July 3, 2022) Crave Theatre Company presents the world premiere of Bad World, a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful new musical about the experience of survivors of sexual assault. With music by James Liptak and Kylie Jenifer Rose, and lyrics by Kylie Jenifer Rose and Jennifer Provenza, Bad World boasts a dynamic and nuanced score that fuses rock, folk, jazz, and musical theatre. With a host of creators from Oregon, California, and Sweden, this devised musical has a book by Kylie Jenifer Rose, James Liptak, Jennifer Provenza, Rachael Singer, Michael Cavazos, Ashley Mellinger, Maya Maria Brown, and Zeloszelos Marchandt, all of whom contributed to the 2021 concept album available at cravetheatre.org. The stage premiere is directed by Rachael Singer and Jennifer Lanier, features performances by Kylie Jenifer Rose, Zeloszelos Marchandt, Gayle Hammersley, and Kayla Leacock, and displays artwork by Shakayla Clark, a resident artist of the Craves Ten, Tiny, Talks program which amplifies Black and Indigenous trans and queer voices. The original art created by Clark for Bad World will be available for purchase during the run of the show.Bad World follows the coming-of-age journey of Rose, an ambitious young woman who was sexually assaulted in Paris while traveling for a research project. After returning to the United States, Rose finds herself haunted by her past; in desperation, she joins a support group for survivors of sexual assault, led by the fiercely protective Zaria. While she initially struggles to share her experience, Rose is eventually carried away by her memory, and her past ebbs, flows, and intermingles with the present of Zaria, the charming, level-headed Langston, and the sweet, sensitive Linnea. A fluid exploration of trauma, mental health, grief, healing, and growth, Bad World is the story of four survivors brought together by pain, but inspired by a need for change. Performances run at Shaking the Tree Theatre (823 SE Grant St, Portland, OR 97214) June 10th through July 3rd, 2022; Thursday through Saturdays at 7:30pm, Sundays at 2:00pm. No performances June 16th - 19th in observation of Juneteenth holiday. Sliding Scale Tickets ($10 minimum) are available at: www.cravetheatre.org/event/bad-world. This musical contains adult subjects, including sexual assault and domestic violence, and is not intended for children.
