MediaRites' Theatre Diaspora Announces 2017 Season and New Members

MediaRites, a nonprofit organization that provides innovative, award-winning documentary, theatre and outreach programs, today announced the 2017 season of enhanced staged readings produced by its Theatre Diaspora project, Oregon's only professional Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) theatre company. Theatre Diaspora also announces two new members who will assist in the organization's mission of portraying authentic AAPI cultural, historical, and social perspectives to reach broad audiences through staged readings.

Back in October actress Wendy Westerwelle woke up, went downstairs made a cup of coffee and went out to the back deck to chat with her husband. When she arrived she found the top of his head bobbing in the water. She screamed, dropped the coffee cup and tried with all her might to pull him out of the water. Mark, being 6'6 and Wendy at 5'4" couldn't retrieve his body - fortunately, a woman was staying at her home and helped Wendy call the paramedics, her Rabbi, and console Wendy.

It would be difficult to know less about Dusty Springfield than I did when I walked into the Sanctuary at Sandy Plaza to see triangle productions' FOREVER DUSTY on Thursday. I knew some of her music, and even had an album, but that was it. Frankly, I expected the show to be a loosely knit story of her greatest hits.
HIS EYE IS ON THE SPARROW Extends Through 3/ 26

His Eye is on the Sparrow, Larry Parr's stirring one-woman musical that celebrates the life of groundbreaking artist Ethel Waters, has been extended for an additional week of performances. The production, which opened last Friday and was originally scheduled to close onMarch 19, will now run through March 26 in the Ellyn Bye Studio. His Eye is on the Sparrow is directed by Timothy Douglas with music direction/accompaniment by Darius Smith. Maiesha McQueen, who made her debut at The Armory last season in Ain't Misbehavin,' stars as Ethel Waters. 
RISE UP: Portland Sings for Justice

On February 20, Presidents' Day, Portland Sings! presents RISE UP: Portland Sings for Justice. A host of the Rose City's most talented artists will come together at Artists Repertory Theatre for an evening celebrating America's constitutional rights through song and story as a benefit for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Expect to hear some powerful folk ballads, show tunes and original works during this concert for Justice.
