Portland Revels begins May and June with May Day at the Portland Children's Museum on May 1, speakers Julia and Tarik Banzi on May 6, and auditions for the 2010 Christmas Revels; taking place June 6 and 12. For more information on the following events, visit www.portlandrevels.org.

May Day at the Portland Children's Museum

May 1st from 10 am until 1 pm, Portland Revels will be celebrating May Day at the Portland Children's Museum. Festivities will include Morris dancing at 11 am, performed by the talented dancers of four local groups, Bridgetown Morris Men, Renegade Rose, the Wild Rose Garland Dancers, and Iron Mountain Sword team. In addition to the Morris performances, there will be crowning of a May Queen and dancing around a Maypole. The Children's Museum staff will have May Day crafts for children to try. The Museum specializes in exhibits and activities for young and elementary school aged children, so this will be a family oriented event. (If you don't have children in your household, you might want to offer your assistance to a relative or neighbor's brood because this May Day celebration will be too much fun to miss). The Portland Children's Museum is located at 4015 SW Canyon Road, near the Oregon Zoo and the Washington Park MAX station. General museum admission will be charged.

Salon Introduces Traditions of Spain

Julia and Tarik Banzi of the Al-Andalus Ensemble are performers and scholars of the music of medieval, Andalusian Spain, and they will be guest artists for the 2010 Christmas Revels. On Thursday, May 6th, 7-9 pm, they will be the featured speakers for a Revels Salon. Salon guests will learn about the courtly music of Medieval Islamic Spain that developed 711-1492 AD, when the cultures of Africa, the East and Western Europe melded to form a unique Andalusian tradition. It is a tradition that survived the re-conquest of Muslim Spain by Christians, and is now considered one of the longest continuous traditions of art music in the world. Admission is $20 for adults, $10 for students. To reserve a seat, please call 503-274-4654, or email info@portlandrevels.org. Location will be given upon registration.
