Throughline Theatre Company opens Eighth season with In the Next Room or The Vibrator Play, opening June 16 at The Henry Heymann Theatre in Oakland. Uproarious yet poignant comedy begins Throughline's exploration of the theme, "The Fair Sex".

At the dawn of the age of electricity, Dr. Givings introduces a treatment for "hysteria." In The Next Room chronicles the first use of the vibrator as a clinical device for bringing women to org*sm. The play also explores the sexual awakening of Mrs. Givings who wants to experience something beyond the passionless relationship she currently has with her husband.

In the Next Room premiered at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2009 and opened on Broadway later the same year. Playwright Sarah Ruhl has written such acclaimed plays as The Clean House, Dead Man's Cell Phone, Euridice, Melancholy Play, Orlando, and Passion Play. Ruhl is widely recognized as one of the most innovative playwrights of her generation and an important feminist voice.

Throughline's production of In the Next Room is directed by Abigail Liz-Perlis, who notably co-directed Everyman for the group in 2014, which the Pittsburgh City Paper called "ambitiously stunning" and "brilliantly rendered." The cast is also packed with local talent, including Ricardo Vila-Roger, Moira Quigley, Madrid Vinarski, Jim Nash, Katie Trupiano, Fenice Thompson, and Liam Ezra Dickinson.

In the Next Room opens Friday, June 16 and runs through Saturday, June 24. Thursday and Friday performances start at 8:00 p.m., Saturday performances at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $20.00 general admission or $15.00 for students and seniors. On opening night, for an additional $10, entry to the Opening Night Party can be purchased. Tickets are available at the door or online at throughline.showclix.com. The 2:00 p.m. performance on Saturday, June 27 is pay-what-you-can, and tickets for this performance can be purchased online or at the door (but are considered donations) and are first come, first served.
