City Theatre Welcomes Matt M. Morrow, New Associate Artistic Director

City Theatre welcomes Matt M. Morrow as its new Associate Artistic Director. Mr. Morrow joins City Theatre's artistic staff for the 2011-12 Season. In addition to working closely with Artistic Director Tracy Brigden and the artistic staff, Matt will direct the 12th Annual Young Playwrights Festival in September and October and the season play Tigers Be Still by Kim Rosenstock in April.

"I'm thrilled and honored to join the artistic team at City Theatre," stated Mr. Morrow. "Since seeing my first professional production here back in 1993, Paula Vogel's Baltimore Waltz, I have long admired the work and mission of City as a home for contemporary, provocative and ambitious new plays. I look forward to working with Tracy, an influential and forward-thinking artistic leader in the field, in collaborating with some of the most vital voices writing for the theatre today. I'm eager to foster an ongoing, meaningful dialogue between our theatre and the greater Pittsburgh community. With both American and world premieres, two new musicals and three adventurous City Events already planned, this year's season is dynamic, adventurous, and thought provoking. I can't wait to work with City's talented staff to bring this season to life. "

He is a creative and exceptionally talented director. Coupled with his experience on the staffs of some of New York's most prestigious theaters and his extensive work in new play development, it was a no-brainer to bring him onboard as part of the dynamic artistic staff at City Theatre."

Matt most recently directed a workshop of Jennifer Haley's new play FROGGY at Sundance Theatre Institute's Theatre Lab in Banff, Canada. Matt's work has been seen at Lincoln Center, Page 73 at Yale, Amas Musical Theatre, Playwrights Horizons, The Atlantic, Primary Stages, Urban Stages, Ensemble Studio Theatre, HERE, Dixon Place, Cherry Lane, MTC, The York, The Tank, NYC Int'l Fringe, Midtown Int'l Festival, among others. Matt has assisted director Lonny Price on Kismet in Encores!, starring Brian Stokes Mitchell and Marin Mazzie. Matt's directing credits include: the musical Only Children (Lincoln Center Director's Lab), The Falsetto Trilogy (1st NYC revival), The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told (1st NYC revival), john and jen (1st NYC revival), the first NYC revival of Lisa Kron's 2.5 Minute Ride (New York Sun: "An exhilarating ride!"), and Jennifer Haley's Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Top Ten of 2010," City Paper: "Breathtaking!").

Matt has served as the Development and Literary Director for Amas Musical Theatre, Development Director for Cherry Lane Theatre, and Development Manager for The Play Company. He has worked in the musical theatre department at Playwrights Horizons with Ira Weitzman, and in administration and management with Roundabout, Second Stage, and on the award-winning Off Broadway production of Forbidden Broadway and American Rhapsody.
