About the production:

Inspired by Simon's early career experience as a junior jokesmith (along with his brother Danny, and the likes of young writers such as Woody Allen) for Your Show of Shows, the play focuses on a Sid Caesar/Jackie Gleason-like character named Max Prince. He is a star of a weekly comedy-variety show circa 1953, who along with his staff (including Simon's alter-ego Lucas Brickman), maintain a running commentary on the writing, fighting, and wacky antics which take place in the writer's room. At the plot's core is Max's ongoing battles with NBC executives who fear his humor is too sophisticated for Middle America. Written by a Pulitzer Prize winner and all-time great playwright, the Wall Street Journal called this play, "old style comedy-fast and furious," while Newsweek said "one of Simon's funniest...comedy, comedy, comedy all the way."
