Arizona Theatre Company Accepting Submissions for 2015 National Latino Playwriting Award
The program was established by ATC to create greater awareness of the work being done by Latino playwrights. Plays may be on any subject. Submitted scripts must be postmarked by Dec. 31, 2014. Winners will be notified by Aug. 1, 2015.
"The National Latino Playwriting Award was founded by Artistic Director David Ira Goldstein to celebrate Latino writers at all stages of their careers. ATC has been the first to recognize many noteworthy plays and playwrights before they have gone on to receive wider recognition, contributing significantly to the canon of contemporary Latina/o works," said ATC Playwright-in-Residence and long-term judge Elaine Romero. "Each year ATC expresses its faith in a Latina/o writer with this award. The number of plays that have gone on to full production continues to be astonishing."
Recent winners include Kristoffer Diaz, The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity, which was a finalist for the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and has been produced in theatres across the country; Michael Mejias' Ghetto Babylon (2013), which earned rave reviews in its world premiere last summer at Off-Broadway's 59E59; Kristiana Colón's Octagon (2014), and Caridad Svich's Spark (2013).
The award winner receives a $1,000 cash award and a possible reading of the play at ATC's Café Bohemia, a unique play-reading series in Tucson and Phoenix.
