Through adulthood, as the list grows, she learns the deep significance the list has on her own life, as she goes to college, falls in love, and builds a home. A tribute to the irrepressible resilience inside all of us and the capacity to find delight in the everyday, Every Brilliant Thing is a very funny and moving new play about mental health that enlists members of the audience to help tell its story.

A young couple are discussing whether or not to have a baby, and they find that it’s no longer such a simple decision to make. There’s the question of readiness, of one’s capability and suitability to becoming a parent; the financial, practical, and emotional responsibilities that come with a child. There’s the fear that nothing will ever be the same, such as changes to a woman’s body and giving up freedom, personal space, and all the time in the world that you once had. And then there’s the current sociocultural landscape: How safe and how wise is it to raise a human being in the midst of political turmoil, climate change, and so much conflict and violence? Lungs is a searing examination of adulthood and true partnership, of choices and compromise. What color should the baby’s nursery be — and will that matter in the long run anyway?
