Sora Baek's one-woman show, "SELL ME: I Am From North Korea," at the 2022 Philadelphia Fringe Festival brings a fresh look at the lives of North Korean refugees and defectors. Inspired by the true stories of incredibly courageous North Korean defectors, the Korean-born playwright brings to the light the continuing obstacles and prejudices defectors face as undocumented refugees. The show is available virtually on demand September 8 through October 2, 2022. SELL ME premiered at the 2019 international Human Rights Art Festival in New York. Tom Block, International Human Rights Art Festival Founder and Executive Director, said "This heart-rending piece will introduce you to an unpleasant and uncomfortable reality." Henry Song, a human rights activist for North Koreans, called the piece "...excellent, it is an important tool to teach people about the North Korean human rights situation."The piece follows a North Korean girl, Jisun, who, on her 15th birthday, makes the heart-wrenching decision to sell herself to an old Chinese man to make money for her dying mothers medications. The creator and performer, Baek, masterfully delivers a brutally honest performance filled with vulnerability, humor, and boundless energy as she examines the nature of diversity, social justice, human rights, and the struggles of the oppressed.
