Philly Improv Theater (PHIT) boasts an exciting May line-up that features comic psycho-analysis and an improv show that gives an unsuspecting audience member a chance to perform alongside one of Philadelphia's noted improv performers.

The May week of performances runs May 4-9. In May, the theater is welcoming Dr Lisa Levy, S.P.'s show, Stand Up, Lie Down for one performance only on Saturday, May 9 at 10 p.m. Tickets cost $10. The theatre is also pitting, m@& against the reigning Cagematch champions, Angry People Building Things, for a CAGEMATCH on Thursday, May 7 at 10 p.m. Tickets cost $5. Philly Improv Theater shows take place at 407 Bainbridge Street. More information is available online at www.phillyimprovtheater.com or at 267-233-1556.

Stand Up, Lie Down gives new meaning to working it out on stage. Dr. Lisa Levy, S.P, brings her psychoanalyst couch from New York City to analyze Philly's funniest comedians, Dave Walk, Kent Haines and group therapy with improv stars, Rare Bird Show. Dr. Levy, S.P. (self-proclaimed) tries to cure these emotionally complex types with help from the audience. Each performer or group will perform for 5 minutes and then have a brief "session" with Dr. Levy. She'll be giving away boxes of tissues that say, "Funny people cry too." to the first 10 ticket holders. The New York Times dubbed her as "A shrink with stage presence."

Levy, who grew up in Elkins Park, is an acclaimed conceptual artist and performer. She is the world's first self-proclaimed psychotherapist and creator of her breakthrough show, Psychotherapy LIVE! which the London Times called, "Riotously funny!" Dr. Levy started her on-stage practice in 2001, and has analyzed countless audience members stateside and overseas, and heard every personal issue known to humankind. Previous guests have included Eugene Mirman, Michael Musto, and Dave Hill.

On Thursday, May 7, reigning CAGEMATCH champions Angry People Building Things take on challenger m@&. m@&, pronounced "matt and," is Rare Bird Show's Matt Holmes performing an improv show with an audience member, a complete stranger and preferably someone who has never seen an improv show before and was dragged there by a friend.

Other highlights to the week include a two-night performance by PHIT Affiliate comedy troupes, CUBED and Meg & Rob. Both shows are 8 p.m. on Friday May 8 and Saturday May 9. Tickets cost $10. CUBED is a fully improvised two-man show from inside the trenches of cubicle life. Then, Meg & Rob will perform a half hour of hilarious, smart, and witty sketch comedy. Also, PHIT's all-star long form improv team, The Moops, will be performing at 10 p.m. on Friday, May 8. Tickets cost $10. The Moops, a collection of some of Philadelphia's best improvisers, creates an original show based on the monologues of a very special guest.

About Philly Improv Theater

Philly Improv Theater (PHIT) is the only longform improvisation theater in the Metro Philadelphia area. Founded as a nonprofit in 2005, PHIT embraces the art of improvisation as an end rather than a means - creating and producing improv, sketch, and alternate comedy shows in the tradition of theaters like Chicago's Second City and New York's Upright Citizens Brigade. To further this philosophy, PHIT offers it's own take on the theories and concepts behind good improvisation in a full curriculum of classes for performers of all skill levels taught by local talent and through master classes with distinguished performers and teachers from all over the world (including Impro author Keith Johnstone, Joe Bill and Mark Sutton of The Second City, and former SNL writer Ali Farahnakian). In addition to performing as part of PHIT's weeklong residency at The Shubin Theatre each month, local improv troupes produced and presented by PHIT have toured extensively on the East Coast and performed in festivals throughout North America.
