Review: THE SHEPHERD'S HUT at State Theatre Centre
Tim Winton's book comes to an emotionally charged life at Heath Ledger Theater
Adapting Tim Winton for the stage is a notorious tightrope walk. His prose is so deeply rooted in the heavy, breathing expanse of the Western Australian landscape that stripping it down to fit between three theatre walls always risks losing the very magic that makes his books work. With BLACK SWAN State Theatre Company’s world premiere of THE SHEPHERD'S HUT, playwright Tim McGarry and director Matt Edgerton have chosen not to fight the limitations of the stage, but rather lean in to them. The result is a striking piece of pure theatre that manages to translate Winton's signature literary punches to the stage.
The immediate talking point is the staging. Set designer Bruce McKinven has transformed the Heath Ledger stage into a stark, minimalist expanse of white sand that evokes the expanses of nothingness from the book. Coupled with Roly Skender’s monotone video projections and Tim Collins’ almost unsettling atmospheric sound design, the production echoes the blistering isolation of the WA saltlands without needing any props. It’s an exercise in restraint that forces the audience to let the performances and imagination paint the scenery.
At the center of this barren landscape is Jaxie Clackton, a 15-year-old running from a violent past. Ryan Hodson delivers a performance of genuine intensity. He captures Jaxie’s untamed, toddler-esque rage perfectly, constantly veering between a survivalist's paranoia and a vulnerable boy's desperation. When he stumbles across Fintan MacGillis—a disgraced Irish priest living in self-imposed exile—the dynamic shifts into a fascinating psychological chess match. George Shevtsov is compelling as the spectral priest towering over Jaxie and the show in general. Watching Shevtsov attempt to gently tame Hodson’s wild animal of a character provides the production's moments of tenderness.
Where the production boldly diverges from traditional narrative is the use of a two-person Greek chorus, played by Ben Mortley and Ella Prince. The duo serves as a brilliant physical manifestation of Jaxie’s internal dialogue and lingering trauma. They hover, physicalise movement, and deliver fragments of Winton’s superb prose with sharpness and punch. This fascinating dynamic runs flawlessly for most of the show before giving way at the end to the show's finale.
Where Winton’s novel concludes with horror that leaves the reader completely shattered, on stage the climactic confrontation is handled with such minimal, choreographed stylisation that the violence lands more as a piece of narrative information than an emotional gut-punch. However, whilst the devastation one feels at the conclusion of the book does not translate to the stage- perhaps by design- one walks away with the play on their mind, needing far more than the show's run time to process the emotional journey.
Ultimately, THE SHEPHERD'S HUT is an ambitious, beautifully orchestrated production that pulls the best of a brilliant book to a brilliant stage performance. It treats the source material with respect while confidently carving out its own theatrical identity. Whilst the absence of an emotional sting at the end may stand out to those who have read the book, the strength of the performances and the stunning visual design make it a compelling piece of West Australian theatre well worth experiencing.
The Shepherd’s Hut plays at the Heath Ledger Theatre until May 31st. Tickets and more information from BLACK SWAN Theater Company.
