LES Shakespeare Company veers to Greek tragedy this year with a production of ANTIGONE by Sophocles adapted and directed by Melody Erfani and presented by Planet Connections Festivity at Paradise Factory Theatre opening June 30with subsequent performances on July 6, 8, 9 and 10. Nick Neagle is choreographer and original music is by the band Lady and the Lion. The cast is Adriana Bohmier, Patrick Falcon, Chantelle Goulevitch, Kevin Mackenzie Mejia, Mike Maloney, Emily Shankman, Jae Woo, Yokko and Zackery Betty.
The ten-week run of the United Solo Festival, featuring 150 productions from six continents, concluded on Sunday, November 22 at Theatre Row in New York, where the festival is a resident company. Beginning with its opening night on September 17, United Solo presented between two and five shows every day, in a vast array of categories. Over 80 of the shows were sold out, and nearly 30 were presented in the ENCORE program, which features companies returning to the festival after successful performances in previous years.
Using the Japanese dance form Butoh and an adapted text, Yokko brings the spirit of Medea alive. This fusion of Eastern dance and Western drama invites the audience inside of Medea's dark and desperate struggle. Trapped in the underworld, she is forever cursed to relive her tragic journey through love, hate, and ultimate loss.
Butoh Medea opens United Solo Theatre Festival at Theatre Row this year. United Solo, the world's largest solo theatre festival in its 6th season, presents over 130 productions from 6 different continents. Butoh Medea received four awards at United Solo 2014: Best One-Woman Show, Best Lighting Design, Best Costume Design and Best Choreography. Moreover, the show was selected to United Solo Europe to present the work in Warsaw, Poland this June. It played sold out show and received much acclaim. This is the third season of United Solo Europe at Teatr Syrena in Warsaw, Poland. The company, based at Theatre Row on 42nd Street in New York City, brings its top-notch solo shows overseas. In previous seasons United Solo Europe has hosted, among many distinguished artists, the two-time Laurence Olivier Award winner Fiona Shaw, and Regina Advento, a member of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. This Spring, the artistic director of United Solo in New York, Omar Sangare, in collaboration with the managing director of Teatr Syrena, Jakub Biegaj, and the artistic director of Teatr Syrena, Wojciech Malajkat, selected new shows and created another week-long theatre festival directed toward European audiences.
In anticipation of its upcoming five-year anniversary, The Ume Group will present "Dream Dances," its first in-residence feature-length performance at Grace and St. Paul's Church this March.
