Brooklyn Art Song Society to Feature Scott Wheeler in IN CONTEXT Series, 4/2

BASS continues its innovative new music series In Context at the Tenri Cultural Center on SaturdayApril 2nd, 2016. This year's featured composer is Scott Wheeler, hailed by Fanfare as “one of the freshest American voices.” The program features Mr. Wheeler's work alongside those by colleagues and mentors (Virgil Thomson and Judith Weir) and favorite classics (Johannes Brahms and Robert Schumann). The program will include the world premiere of Ben Gunn. Soprano Elisabeth Marhsall, mezzo soprano Kate Maroney, tenor Brandon Snook, and baritone Steven Eddy join pianists Michael Brofman, Jocelyn Dueck, and Miori Sugiyama.

Michael Korie to Receive Blitzstein Award for Musical Theater

The American Academy of Arts and Letters announces that librettist/lyricist Michael Korie will receive the Marc Blitzstein Award for Musical Theater of $10,000. Established in 1965 by friends of the late Academician Marc Blitzstein in his memory, the award is given to a composer, lyricist, or librettist to encourage the creation of works of merit for musical theater and opera. The jurors were John Harbison (chairman), J. D. McClatchy, Shulamit Ran, Augusta Read Thomas, and Yehudi Wyner.

Brooklyn Art Song Society continues its ambitious survey of British song with Contemporary Britannica, which features the songs of three acclaimed living English composers: Thomas Adès, Harrison Birtwistle, and Oliver Knussen.

Brooklyn Art Song Society's Next Concert Set for 12/3

Brooklyn Art Song Society returns to the Brooklyn Historical Society on December 3rd 2015 for part three of Britannica after last year's sold out all-Poulenc program. For this program BASS features two of the most beloved British song cycles: Gerald Finzi's A Young Man's Exhortation and Ralph Vaughan William's Songs of Travel. For A Young Man's Exhortation Finzi set the poetry of Thomas Hardy (Tess of the d'Urbervilles); in fact, the relationship between Finzi and Hardy is akin to that between Schubert and Goethe. Songs of Travel captures the romance and idealism of youth through the works of Robert Louis Stevenson (Treasure Island). Gerald Finzi's masterpiece will be performed by tenor Dominic Armstrong accompanied by pianist Michael Brofman. Baritone Sydney Outlaw and pianist Brent Funderburk both make their BASS debut with Songs of Travel.

Cantata Singers' Expanded Chamber Series Begins Tonight

Cantata Singers' expanded Chamber Series begins tonight, November 17, 2017 at 7:30pm at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences with Made in America, a program of twentieth-century American chamber music by Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, and Irving Fine. Cantata Singers' Chamber Series will be in residence at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cambridge for the entirety of the 2015-16 Season.

Brooklyn Art Song Society is set to present In Memoriam: Songs of the Great War. Britannica Part II: In Memoriam: Songs of the Great War will be held Friday November 6, 2015 7:30PM at The Old Stone House (336 3rd St, Brooklyn, NY 11215). Tickets range from $10 to $20.
