Joe's Pub at The Public Theater has announced its nightly performances for this week, July 12-23, featuring Bridget Everett, Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams, Jeffrey Steele, Tacoma Narrows, Matt Alber, Meow Meow, Shaina Taub, Charming Disaster and more. Scroll down for details!
In her new show, RED, WHITE AND INDIGO, Lady Rizo is all about coming to terms with that "very bad boyfriend" she calls America.
"I think he reads my email," she joked with a wry smile, during her first show of a three-night run at Joe's Pub on March 23. "And I know he's f**king with my birth control."
And while getting into a relationship thinking you can change somebody is never the best idea, she still had to try. Standing tall in front of a room divider paneled with an upside-down American flag, Lady Rizo was dead-set on reclaiming the idea of patriotism.
This spring, Joe's Pub at The Public welcomes a lineup of singer-songwriters that redefine the traditional conventions of the title. A Joe's Pub favorite, Lady Rizo is a cabaret star with songwriter chops, who will debut a new show, Red, White & Indigo, all about her love-hate relationship with America, and tease her forthcoming album Indigo from March 23-25.
Just yesterday, WAITRESS star Jessie Mueller and director Diane Paulus visited Ann Taylor's Rockefeller Center store (600 Fifth Avenue at 48th Street) to share their story and perform from the show. Ann Taylor and WAITRESS just launched a partnership at anntaylor.com featuring the two women in a series of portraits and a video.
The holiday season is not complete without the perfect music to accompany it. 'Broadway's Carols for a Cure' is the latest compilation album that embodies the spirit of the season like nothing else can. A project born completely out of love, 'Broadway's Carols for a Cure' pairs the casts from famous Broadway musicals with songs that are both classic and new. The result is pure gold that will make you reach for the 'repeat' button over and over again.
Broadway's Ashley Perez Flanagan (vocals/percussion) and Yair Evnine (cello/beats), alongside Andrew Bancroft (vocals/guitar), have formed Moondrunk, a New York indie pop trio.
Alt-cabaret star Lady Rizo (aka Amelia Zirin-Brown) made her way to the stage to join her multi-instrumental accompanist, Yair Evnine. Threading regally through the audience, she held a translucent umbrella over her head, singing (my favorite Prince song) 'The Beautiful Ones' to Evnine's cello in a beautifully powerful, dusky-toned voice. Her terrific new show, Multiplied (continuing at Joe's Pub on July 25 and 26) is a meditation on modern motherhood, specifically what it means for an artist accustomed to the nomadic freedom of a life on tour to settle into life as a new parent.
Joe's Pub at The Public presents the New York City premiere of Multiplied, the new show from Grammy Award-winning Lady Rizo, on July 19, 20, 25 and 26. The world-renowned cabaret superstar explores how fecundity and parenthood fit with the revelry of showbiz. Lady Rizo ingeniously weaves carefully chosen pop songs with her own stirring originals. Tickets ($30) are available now via www.joespub.com, phone (212-967-7555) and in-person at The Public Theater's Taub Box Office (425 Lafayette St, @ Astor Place, NYC).
Vocalist Joey Arias is not what he appears to the uninitiated. This is not a drag performer executing pastiche, but rather an artist serious about music with the talent to offer a full-blooded show. Lifelong affinity for Billie Holiday first professionally surfaced in 1987's Recording Arias on Holiday and continued with the Off-Broadway run of Strange Fruit, an homage to the icon. Her concert Wednesday night for Lincoln Center's American Songbook series, with evocative musical arrangement by Matt Ray, brings Arias' devotion "all the way from downtown above 14th Street."
WELL-STRUNG hasn't been around for decades but since hitting the scene they've proven that while looks will get you pretty far, it's looks AND talent that will take you all the way.
On Monday, March 31, The Broadway at Birdland concert series welcomed composer Lance Horne, along with a bevy of Broadway performers singing his praises and songs. On the heels of his premier with the SF Gay Men's Chorus and appearance at Sydney's Mardis Gras, Lance Horne made his Broadway at Birdland debut with guests including long-time collaborators Alan Cumming, Alice Ripley, Rachel Dratch, Stephen Wallem, Michael Rose, Lea DeLaria, Pamela Bob, and Sarah Shenkkan. The band included Matt Aronoff on bass, John Bollinger on drums and Yair Evnine on cello. This very special concert included highlights from Horne's debut album 'First Things Last,' and several world premiers, including a sneak peak into The Night Before My Wedding, Mr. Horne's collaboration with Neil Gaiman. Check out a look back at the evening below!
MAUDE MAGGART - the acclaimed vocalist hailed as 'singular and arresting' by the New York Times, 'wonderful' by Business Week and 'ingenious' by the Village Voice - will make her debut at the Cafe Carlyle with a special engagement from February 25 to March 1. Her new show 'The Door Opened' will feature numbers by golden-age songwriters Irving Berlin ('I Used To Be Color Blind'), Harry Warren ('Serenade In Blue') and Dorothy Fields ('Blue Again'), in addition to rarely-heard songbook gems including 'Why Am I So Romantic?' (introduced in the legendary Marx Brothers film Animal Crackers) and 'I May Be Wrong, But I Think You're Wonderful' (performed by Maude's grandmother). The evening will feature Music Director John Boswell on piano. She will preview the Carlyle run with two performances at the Gardenia in Los Angeles on February 14 and 15.
In the midst of their first National concert tour and their first major magazine cover spread, Well-Strung, The Singing String Quartet, will make their debut at New York's celebrated Broadway club 54 Below with shows on February 2 and March 16 at 9:30 PM. The foursome have been referred to as "absolutely amazing" by BBC Radio host Jo Good during their recent London debut, and as "the hottest thing with a bow since Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games" by the New York Daily News. The new show directed by Donna Drake features new arrangements of songs by Pink, Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift and Third Eye Blind among others as well as new material written by Jeffery Roberson (aka Varla Jean Merman). When they made their anticipated London debut this fall, BBC Radio host Jo Good called Well-Strung 'absolutely amazing' after their on-air performance and interview for her show. In the States, they've also recently been called the 'hottest thing with a bow since Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games' by the New York Daily News. Well-Strung: the Singing String Quartet will make their West Coast debut with a series of concerts in four cities over the holiday season. The quartet will appear at Feinstein's in San Francisco on December 27 at 8pm and December 28 at 7pm; at Rockwell Table & Stage in Los Angeles on December 30 at 8pm; at Martini's Above Fourth in San Diego on New Year's Eve, December 31 at 7pm; and at The Copa in Palm Springs on January 3 and 4 at 8pm. The group has been on a hot streak: in addition to their recent London debut, they've just wrapped a three-month run at the prestigious Art House in Provincetown, two recent hit New York productions Off-Broadway in the past year, their first album just released in spring, and a new music video that has caught the eye of the national press. The new show will feature new arrangements of songs by Pink, Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift and Third Eye Blind among others as well as new material written by Jeffery Roberson (aka Varla Jean Merman).
