terraNOVA Collective Presents SUBTERRANEAN 8/13

terraNOVA Collective returns August 13, 2009 at 10:00pm with SUBTERRANEAN, their monthly performance party in the D-Lounge, a 75-seat cabaret-style venue below the Daryl Roth Theatre at 101 East 15th Street at Union Square. SUBTERRANEAN presents a variety of performers, including spoken word, music, burlesque, magic, storytelling, short play readings, vaudeville acts and DJs.

Freeman, Goldberg, Franklin, Latifah, Groban And More Set For Nelson Mandela Day Concert 7/18

46664 and the Nelson Mandela Foundation today announced that Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Will.i.am, T-Pain, Gloria Gaynor, Jesse Clegg and Whoopi Goldberg will join the lineup of artists performing at the Mandela Day concert celebration on July 18th, Nelson Mandela's 91st birthday. The concert originally announced for Madison Square Garden will now be held at historic Radio City Music Hall. The additional performers will join Aretha Franklin, Wyclef Jean, Queen Latifah, Dave Stewart, Josh Groban and Jesse McCartney, along with Angelique Kidjo, Baaba Maal, the Soweto Gospel Choir, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Chris Chameleon, Freshlyground, Emmanuel Jal, Loyiso, Sipho Mabuse, Vusi Mahlasela, Thandiswa Mazwai, Suzanna Owiyo and many more.

Composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, widely considered the most influential artist working in American musical theater over the past half-century, will visit Indiana University in April at the invitation of IU's Department of Theatre and Drama.

Minnelli, Holliday, Grey & More Sing 'NEW YORK MOMENTS' with NY Philharmonic 4/20

Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch will lead the New York Philharmonic in New York Moments, a concert featuring iconic musical moments from Broadway and film, with stars from the stage and screen (in alphabetical order): Ashley Brown, who originated the title role in Mary Poppins on Broadway; Maria Friedman, who played Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd and Marian in The Woman in White in London; Joel Grey, whose numerous starring roles have included the famous M.C. in Cabaret, on Broadway and in the film; Jennifer Holliday, one of the original Dreamgirls; Liza Minnelli, last seen on Broadway in Liza's at The Palace; Kelli O'Hara and Paulo Szot, stars of the current Lincoln Center Theater production of South Pacific; and 15-year-old up-and-coming singer, Nikki Yanofsky. The concert will take place Monday, April 20, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. All except Mr. Hamlisch and Ms. O'Hara are making their New York Philharmonic debuts.

The festival is thrilled to announce that American Violet , a true story about race, poverty and the criminal justice system starring Nicole Beharie and Alfre Woodard will open the festival on April 18th.

Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind Sesame Street, powers up this January with a new version of one of television's most beloved children's series, The Electric Company. The new series, designed to combat the literacy crisis America's second graders are facing, has been re-energized with 35 half-hour episodes for today's media-driven generation with a truly interactive experience. The series launches on PBS KIDS GO! January 19th with a special two hour sneak peek marathon before it settles into its regular weekly timeslot on Fridays beginning January 23rd (check local listings).
