Mercury Theater Chicago, 3745 N Southport Ave., will celebrate Stephen Sondheim's birthday at The Hypocrites' production INTO THE WOODS with a weeklong celebration beginning on Sunday, March 16 with a panel discussion following the 3 p.m. performance with Andra Velis Simon from Columbia College Chicago and Director Geoff Button, and a second panel discussion on Saturday, March 22 following the 2 p.m. performance with Kris Vire, Associate Editor at Time Out Chicago and Executive Director L. Walter Stearns. The matinee performance on March 22, Stephen Sondheim's actual birthday, will also feature a classic Sondheim sing-a-long immediately following the panel discussion with selections from Merrily We Roll Along, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George and Roadshow. A delicious birthday cake from gourmet Southport bakery Sensational Bites A Dessert Cafe will be served following the sing-a-long on March 22. The whole family will enjoy this heart-warming musical story of the first Christmas tree ship and the family who risked their lives to fill Chicago with the Christmas spirit. Hailed as 'A sacred part of a Chicago Christmas!' by The Chicago Tribune, the production features a powerful, moving story, an exquisite score of original music and traditional holiday favorites, and a company of 25 actors and musicians. Executive Director Walter Stearns announces a new season at Mercury Theater Chicago, 3745 N. Southport Avenue, including Into the Woods, Avenue Q, The Addams Family - The Musical and The Christmas Schooner. As the season opener, Mercury Theater Chicago presents The Hypocrites Theater Company in a revolutionary staging of the Sondheim storybook musical Into the Woods. This is followed by the professional Chicago premiere of Avenue Q - a coming of age musical in the style of an adult "Sesame Street." Just in time for Halloween, The Addams Family - the Musical will haunt the Mercury Theater stage. The season finale is the return voyage of the Chicago holiday tradition, The Christmas Schooner. Single tickets are available starting at $29, and 4 show subscription packages start as low as $100. Season packages and Into the Woods tickets go on sale December 8th.
