Farmers Alley Theatre is closing its historic 10th anniversary season with the biggest musical production ever, Mel Brooks' record-setting 12 Time Tony Award Winning comedic masterpiece, THE PRODUCERS. In support of its commitment to theater for all, Trinity Repertory Company announces a series of moderately-adjusted performances of shows in the 2018-19 Season to meet the needs of audience members with autism and/or with sensory-processing disorders. Sensory-friendly performances will be identical to other performances of the run, but will feature a lantern placed discretely in the theater to let patrons know when a loud sound or intense lighting cue (such as strobe lights) is about to play, giving them the chance to close their eyes or block their ears. Tickets to Trinity Rep's sensory-friendly performances can be purchased as a subscription starting at $114 for all six plays or starting at $25 for single productions. Subscriptions are available now and non-subscription tickets will go on sale August 14, 2018.
In her third production at JACK, playwright Amina Henry shares a ghost story (with songs) about a homeless man who is approached in the park by the ghost of a murdered prostitute. The ghost enlists him on a quest to find her remains so that her grieving mother can finally bury her and move past her mourning. Hunter John and Jane approaches trauma, mental illness and violence towards women in a whimsical way, giving the audience the opportunity to engage with difficult topics through poetic language as well as through a rich musical and visual landscape. With this work, Henry re-imagines what a love story can be, re-imagines what a musical can be, and proposes a world in which all lost or missing individuals are worthy of being found.
TheatreWorks Silicon Valley continues its 2018/19 season with Native Gardens, a cutting-edge suburban comedy from America's hottest new playwright and National Latino Playwriting Award winner, Karen Zacarias. When an up-and-coming Latino couple purchases a home in a sought-after neighborhood beside the prize-winning garden of a prominent Washington D.C. family, conflicts over fences and flora spiral into an uproarious clash of cultures, exposing both couples' notions of race, taste, class, and privilege. This year's production features the bilingual English-Spanish adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Tempest (La Tempestad) translated by Orlando Hernandez and will be directed by Brown/Trinity MFA rising second-year Tatyana-Marie Carlo.
