There's a lightning-in-a-bottle quality that permeates Steel Magnolias. With a cast that includes Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, and Julia Roberts, it's no surprise that the film version was such a hit and continues to be an enduring classic. But the true power of Steel Magnolias is its story and themes of the bonds between women, and that's exactly why City Theatre's production of the play is such a success. Director Andy Berkovsky and his incredible cast of six aren't interested in replicating Sally, Dolly, Shirley, Daryl, Olympia, and Julia. They're interested in creating original characters with deep friendships.
Fall in love with the ladies of Truvy's Beauty Salon all over again! The City Theatre proudly presents the holiday production of Robert Harling's funny and moving comedic gem, Steel Magnolias. Under the direction of City Theatre Artistic Director Andy Berkovsky, performances begin November 22 through December 22 at The City Theatre, including two shows Thanksgiving weekend, Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1.

Set in Ireland's County Donegal in 1936, DANCING AT LUGHNASA is a memory play told from the point of view of the adult Michael Evans. He recounts that summer spent in his aunts' cottage when he was seven years old, when love briefly seemed possible for three of his aunts and the family welcomed home their frail elder brother, returning from a life as missionary in Africa. The play takes place around the festival of Lughnasa, the festival of the first fruits, when the harvest is welcomed. Whether Michael's family will reap a bountiful or bitter harvest remains a question until the very end.
