Miami New Drama presents The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder adapted for the stage by David Greenspan- October 24-25, 2019 a?" Preview October 26, 2019 a?" Opening Night through November 17, 2019 Tickets starting at $39.
Miami New Drama at the Colony Theatre is proud to present THE BRIDGE OF SAN LUIS REY, an adventurous adaptation of Thorton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize winning novel written and starring six-time Obie Award winning playwright, David Greenspan. The multi-faceted tale is turned into a wryly lyrical fable of fate, love, and the transformative magic of theater.
THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH is one of two Pulitzer Prize winning plays by Thorton Wilder. Though the other, OUR TOWN, is far better known and far more frequently produced. The title comes from a phrase in the book of Job (19:20) and refers to the commonly used expression: to have escaped by the skin of one's teeth. The biblical reference is rather fitting. Like the bible, this play is meant to express an abstract or spiritual meaning through concrete or material form; a symbolical narrative. Biblical references are woven through this allegorical play that in the course of three acts spans thousands of years of human experience.
The sometimes confusing, amusing, and thought-provoking play premiered in 1942. This production has been freshened up a bit and includes modern references some of which are particularly relevant to the Berkshires. The main characters are George and Maggie Antrobus, their two children, Henry and Gladys, and Sabina, who appears as the family's maid in the first and third acts, and as a beauty queen temptress in the second act. The play's action takes place in a relatively modern setting but is full of anachronisms reaching back to prehistoric times.
The most producible classic American play, OUR TOWN, is thankfully one of its best. Zao Theatre's production delivers an enjoyable, well-performed production running in Apache Junction through April 13th.
THREE SHITTY SONS is a production worth further attention. While the play is sure to grow from this first staging, it possesses the bones of a well-crafted theatrical piece. Hilarious, fast-paced, and bizarre, this play is a brave and enjoyable new work.
As most people know with live theater, there is an underlying risk in promoting that a specific star will be there at every single performance, as advertised in a specific project. Unfortunately, that's simply not realistic nor is it always going to be the case, due to a multitude of factors beyond anyone's control. To those worried about a future date in the national tour's run in which they will have to miss Ms. Buckley in the title role for any reason (which was recently the case during several days of a week-long engagement in Costa Mesa), I have two words for you: don't worry. As bummed as I was not being able to see Ms. Buckley's long-anticipated take on Dolly Levi (and I really really wanted to see Ms. Buckley), her admirable understudy Ms. Sheridan is a terrific, wonderfully game substitute. But as much as Ms. Buckley was, perhaps, a huge draw for many to come check out yet another production of this timeless classic, what audiences will end up experiencing as a whole when they stay is just as equally important a reason to see this brand new revival. Be sure to stick around and behold the wonders of this genuinely entertaining musical classic-from its unforgettable score and visual appeal, to its laugh-inducing silliness and cheeky fun.

It is a universal human experience trying to find where you belong; to find your home. In our 52nd season here at Patio Playhouse, I'm excited to present a series of shows that explore finding family and home.
Thorton Wilder's Our Town tells the story of the everyday lives of the citizens of a fictional American small town of Grover's Corners through three acts: "Daily Life," "Love and Marriage," and "Death and Eternity." Narrated by a stage manager and performed with minimal props and sets, this show is uniquely suited for our King Avenue sanctuary. You won't want to miss this telling of Our Town, during its 80th anniversary of its Broadway opening.
Performances run March 8, 9, 10 at 7:30 pm and March 11 at 3:00pm.
All performances are at King Avenue United Methodist Church, 299 King Ave., Columbus, OH. Childcare is available during the Friday evening and Sunday matinee performances. Admission is free, but a $10 donation is encouraged.
Theater's next generation of actors will come from all over the globe, to be certain, but one might find an impressive concentration of artists on the campus of the University of Southern California, where the 2018 list of candidates for the Master of Fine Arts in acting rivals any group to be found anywhere. Take Isadora Lee Cintron Moya, for example. A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, she earned her bachelor's degree in theater from the University of Puerto Rico, where she was a member of the university's acclaimed Traveling Theatre Group.
