Sundance Institute and Mahindra today announced the winners of the 2014 Sundance Institute | Mahindra Global Filmmaking Award, in recognition and support of emerging independent filmmakers from around the world. The winning directors and projects are Hong Khaou, MONSOON from Vietnam/UK; Tobias Lindholm, A WAR from Denmark; Ashlee Page, ARCHIVE from Australia; and Neeraj Ghaywan, FLY AWAY SOLO from India.
The Film Society of Lincoln Center previously announced For Your Consideration: Oscar Hopefuls, celebrating films from around the world and for possible consideration in the Best Documentary Feature and Best Foreign Language Film categories for the 2014 Academy Awards®. The series-an opportunity to catch up on some of the best films of the year-will span two weeks with For Your Consideration: Documentary Oscar Hopefuls from December 20-26 and For Your Consideration: Foreign Oscar Hopefuls from today, December 27-January 2, 2014.
Nine features will advance to the next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category for the 86th Academy Awards®. Seventy-six films had originally been considered in the category.

A record 76 countries have submitted films for consideration in the Foreign Language Film category for the 86th Academy Awards. Moldova and Saudi Arabia are first-time entrants; Montenegro is submitting for the first time as an independent country.
The film stars Carey Mulligan (The Great Gatsby, Drive), Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone, Bullhead), Michael Sheen (Midnight in Paris, Frost/Nixon), Tom Sturridge (Tony Nominee for 'Orphans', On the Road, Pirate Radio) and Juno Temple.

The Wagner/Cuban Company's Magnolia Pictures announced today that they have acquired North American rights to BIG STAR: NOTHING CAN HURT ME, the definitive documentary about the beloved and influential 70s rock band Big Star. Directed by Drew DeNicola and Oliva Mori, the film was produced by Mori and Danielle McCarthy, executive-produced by John Fry, founder of Ardent Studios, with Gill Holland and David Armillei, and co-produced by Brian Sprouse.

Festen is a stage adaptation of The Celebration, the beloved prize-winning Danish Dogma 95 film (1998) by Thomas Vinterberg and Mogens Rukov, about the 60th birthday party of a family patriarch, at which a dark family secret is revealed. Written for the stage by Vinterberg and translated into Polish by the director, TR Artistic Director Grzegorz Jarzyna, Festen exposes the depths of a family dynamic passed on from generation to generation, a rich metaphor for the slow, inexorable workings of power, history, guilt and responsibility.
