It was one of the most love-filled, musically-thrilling birthday parties ever, when the folks at Jim Caruso's Cast Party celebrated the 85th Birthday of the most energetic, vocally dazzling, swinging nightclub divas on Earth, Marvelous Marilyn Maye. Scroll below for photos from the concert!

Singer Ann Hampton Callaway called it 'Musical Church,' and deemed host Jim Caruso the 'Irreverent Reverend!' Monday night's Cast Party was the be-all and end-all of extreme open-mic madness, with impromptu performances by some of the best and brightest on the Broadway, jazz, cabaret and concert scenes. Callaway led a blues vocal quintet, along with headliner Lorna Luft, Broadway leading lady Carrie Manolakos, Birdland's William Blake and Manilow-co-star Muffy Hendrix. Jim Caruso's Cast Party continues to dazzle packed houses of showbiz insiders and the folks who love them every Monday night at the historic music room, Birdland. This past week, Carol Woods, currently Mama Morton in Chicago on Broadway, delighted the audience with a soulful performance of 'God Bless The Child,' and her co-workers, Amra-Faye Wright (Velma Kelly) and Patrick Rinn led the applause. Cast Party host Jim Caruso turned one year older this past week, so the Monday night 'extreme' open mic was awash in birthday balloons and party hats. The cast of the Broadway production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roofshowed up to celebrate their success, and their very own 'Brick,' Benjamin Walker, performed a very blue/bluesy 'New York State Of Mind.' Cast member Emily Bergl showed why she's one of the most popular ladies in cabaret when she sang her heart out, too. Scroll below for photos from the concert!
When it comes to the number of award shows staged in a given season, the film, TV and recording industry no longer leave New York Cabaret in the stardust. Kicking off a 10-week period during which the Big Apple cabaret scene will now feature four award ceremonies (including the first-ever BroadwayWorld.com Awards on February 21, the 28th annual Bistro Awards on March 4, and the 27th annual MAC Awards on March 21), the 11th annual Nightlife Awards (voted on by a select group of cabaret and nightlife writers and critics) was staged at The Town Hall on January 14 and, for the most part, was a pleasantly entertaining event. Co-produced by Max Weintraub and nightlife impresario Scott Siegel (Broadway by the Year, 11 O'Clock Numbers at 11 O'Clock, Broadway Ballyhoo, et al), this year's show featured the usual mix of nightclub singing legends, budding cabaret stars, solid veterans of musical theater, outstanding jazz vocalists, stellar instrumentalists, and quirky comedians, almost all delivering the goods under the smooth direction of Scott Coulter.
Bill Charlap, Julie Halston, Jim Caruso, Mark Nadler, Lauren Fox, Marilyn Maye, Faith Prince, James Barbour, Rupert Holmes, Jane Monheit, Emily Bergl, Jessica Kirson, Kate McGarry, Jason Graae and Carole J. Bufford, all took part in the Nightlife Awards hosted by Multiple Emmy Award Winner Bruce Vilanch.

"Strippers and Satchmo and guys who sing gospel' sounds like a bastardized Rodgers and Hart lyric, but it helps explain the variety of talent that showed up for Jim Caruso's Cast Party at Birdland on Monday evening. David Phelps, the award-winning tenor best known for his work with the Gaither Vocal Band absolutely thrilled the crowd with "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "Nessun Dorma" (a Birdland first). Jeremy Giraud Abram is currently portraying jazz legend Louis Armstrong at Theater 3 in Manhattan, and impressed everyone with his "Wonderful World." Jaymes and James, Chippendales dancers from Las Vegas currently heating up small screens on "The Amazing Race," charmed the room and gained even more fans! Adan Canto, starring in the new Fox thriller, "The Following," is not just another good looking TV star…he's a first-rate singer. Australian bff's Matthew Newton and Matt Baker performed a gorgeous standard together. Dawn Derow showed off her musical stuff, and promoted her upcoming cabaret act. William Blake sang the blues, like he will at his upcoming Sidewalk Cafe gig. The Cast Party Symphony Orchestra (Tedd Firth, Steve Doyle & Daniel Glass) accompanied the extraordinary talent into the wee hours, as they do every single Monday night.
