As BroadwayWorld reported last week, Broadway might be celebrating a successful season, but casting directors still are not pleased with their standing in the theatre community. The Teamsters Local 817 union just released the following statement:

Broadway might be celebrating a successful season, but casting directors still are not pleased with their standing in the theatre community. The union just released the following statement:

The critically acclaimed musical THE BAND'S VISIT will arrive on Broadway in Fall 2017 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre (243 West 47th Street). THE BAND'S VISIT will begin performances on Saturday, October 7, 2017, and officially open on Thursday, November 9, 2017. Tickets are now on sale.

Getting past a casting director can be the key to starting a successful career on Broadway, and can make or break the success of a show. But these highly specialized and influential individuals are some of the least protected workers on Broadway. In a feature by the New York Daily News, a number of New York's biggest names in casting revealed the importance of their push for union protection and the struggles they face without it.

For the second year in a row, I had the great pleasure of attending the Triangle Rising Star Awards at the Durham Performing Arts Center. This regional competition brings together high school musical theater students from Central and Eastern North Carolina to perform and compete for the chance to represent the Triangle in The National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York City this summer on June 26th. The national competition celebrates outstanding student performances in high school musical productions from all over the United States.

Denver Center for the Performing Arts and producer Stacey Mindich just announced that the national tour of DEAR EVAN HANSEN will launch in Denver in October of 2018, kicking off the 2018/19 DCPA Broadway season.  Nominated for nine Tony Awards® including Best Musical, DEAR EVAN HANSEN with a book by Tony® nominee Steven Levenson, score by Academy Award winners and Tony® nominees Benj Pasek & Justin Paul and directed by four-time Tony® nominee Michael Greif, will play The Buell Theatre.  Information regarding on-sale dates and tickets will be announced at a later time. Following last year's hit debut season, BroadwayWorld is excited to bring you a brand new season of Turning the Tables! Featuring Ellyn Marie Marsh, Andrew Briedis, Andrew Chappelle, Julia Mattison, and created by Marsh, Turning the Tables caught fire in 2016 with a season devoted to Broadway's hottest casting directors getting the tables turned on them by the actors. The improv based series featured your favorite casting directors such as Rachel Hoffman, Bernie Telsey and Tara Rubin. Season Two features a brand-new and unique take on the popular niche web series.

In this episode: Felicia Finley, soon to be in The Muny's 'All Shook Up' was born in the Appalachian Mountains, raised in New Orleans, and simply tells it like it is. She started off in ballet, toured, was in the ensemble, was a swing, and then a stand-by and now cemented herself as a leading lady. It was Cy Colman who pushed her to embrace centerstage. Felicia is a woman that has the motto: know who you are, be yourself, and clip coupons along the way.

You don't always need a fairy godmother for your dreams to come true. Nineteen-year-old Emily Bautista was lucky enough to have extremely supportive parents and a boatload of talent instead. The thankful and humble young woman is now performing eight times a week in the Broadway revival of “Miss Saigon” as an ensemble member and understudies the lead: Kim. Emily and I actually went to high school together at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts for Musical Theatre, and I was floored and overjoyed to see that she had been cast in the production. Bautista took some time in between shows of the Tony-nominated production to chat with me about her experience landing her first Broadway show.

Yale Repertory Theatre concludes its 50th Anniversary Season with the world premiere of MARY JANE by Amy Herzog, directed by Anne Kauffman, now through May 20 at Yale Repertory Theatre (1120 Chapel Street). Opening Night is Friday, May 5. The cast of Mary Jane includes Kathleen Chalfant, Emily Donahoe, Vella Lovell, Miriam Silverman, and Shona Tucker. On Monday, May 1st Theater People podcast welcomes MISS SAIGON star Eva Noblezada. For the episode, Noblezada shares her story of being discovered by casting director Tara Rubin at the 2013 National High School Musical Theater Awards (AKA The Jimmy Awards) and being fast-tracked to audition for the West End revival of MISS SAIGON.
