It's already heating up in Nashville and it's not even summer yet! But Nashville area theater companies are hard at work to ensure that audiences have a lot to choose from in the way of live theater presented in cool, darkened theaters. Here are our suggestions for the most eagerly anticipated shows of the sultry summer season…

Nashville Repertory Theatre is proud to present its newest production Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, the delightfully hilarious Tony Award-winning comedy. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike runs tonight, April 9-25, 2015 at Andrew Johnson Theater at Tennessee Performing Arts Center.

You must simply bring together eight of Nashville's finest actresses under the direction of a man who is helping to change the face of local theater with his inventive, imaginative original works. Then give them two noteworthy scripts from the late 20th century and place them in a rehearsal hall to prepare for public consumption

Nashville Rep will present two plays in repertory as a part of its popular REPaloud staged reading series in an effort to prod discussion about issues related to successful women. The series will take place November 12 - 15 at Nashville Rep's Rehearsal Hall (NPT Studio A, 161 Rains Avenue) and will include David Mamet's Pulitzer Prize-winner Glengarry Glen Ross featuring an all-female cast (Wednesday, November 12 and Friday, November 14) and Caryl Churchill's Top Girls (Thursday, November 13 and Saturday, November 15). The same cast of talented Nashville actresses will be featured in the staged readings of each play.

Tennessee Repertory Theatre has worked with Pulitzer Prize-winners, Tony Award-winners, and Oscar Award-winners (largely through its burgeoning Ingram New Works Project). And now Nashville's flagship professional theatre can add a Heisman Trophy-winner to that list: Eddie George. The former Tennessee Titan will headline the February production of The Whipping Man.

Street Theatre Company has yet another edgy rock musical on their hands. Opening today, Passing Strange explores life and the journey one young man takes to self-discovery. With direction by Jon Royal and musical direction by Rollie Mains, Passing Strange is a simple story, but one that will resonate with most every person in the audience.

The play consists of eleven 'exhibits' that re-explore and undermine stereotypes of what it means to be black. The play tackles issues such as oppression, stereotypes, and self-identity with a satirical twist, and examines the strong desire and struggle for African Americans to release centuries of oppression.

Stephen Adly Guirgis' new high-octane, verbal cage match about love, fidelity and misplaced haberdashery, THE MOTHERF**KER WITH THE HAT, pushes the envelope at the Roxy Regional Theatre's theotherspace for four performances only, beginning Wednesday, March 20, at 7pm.

Theater people from throughout Tennessee gathered at Belmont University's Bill and Carole Troutt Theatre on Sunday night for the 2013 First Night Honors to pay tribute to a group of eight remarkable people who have made indelible marks on the theater scene throughout their storied careers. Hosted by Holly Shepherd and Joel Diggs, the gala evening honored the eight leading lights of Tennessee theater as they were recognized as members of the First Night Class of 2013 Honorees.
