The New York Dance and Performance Awards (The Bessies), NYC's premier dance awards honoring outstanding creative work in the field, announced today the 40 nominees for the 2012-13 season. Announced at a press conference by members of The Bessies Selection Committee, the nominations (listed below) were made by an independent committee of 38 dance industry professionals. Produced in partnership with Dance/NYC, Bessie Award categories include Outstanding Production, Outstanding Performer, Outstanding Visual Design, Outstanding Composition or Sound Design and Outstanding Revived Work.
The Group Theatre Too (GTT) recently presented its sixth annual Choreographer's Canvas, a one-night event featuring the works of over fifteen established and emerging choreographers from around the country. The Canvas, headed by GTT Executive Producer Justin Boccitto, played at the Manhattan Movement and Arts Center on Saturday May 18th and showcased many styles of dance including tap, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, theatre dance, aerial and this year swing dance. For the past 6 years the Canvas has presented over 65 choreographers, giving opportunity to over 450 dancers performing to sold houses. Check out photos from the event below!

Now it's sixth year, the Canvas is a showcase opportunity for choreographers to present their work in an Off-Broadway venue in Manhattan. All styles of dance will be considered and featured in the Canvas including but not limited to tap, jazz, theatre dance, contemporary, hip-hop, modern, ballet, lyrical, aerial, flamenco, Bollywood, etc.

JCE features works from emerging to established choreographers, and this year, the performance will feature works from seasoned jazz veterans Sue Samuels and Crystal Chapman. Newcomers include Tyrell V. Rolle, who was featured on 'SYTYCD' in 2010, and Matt Pardo, a dancer from the Lucinda Childs Dance Company.

The spring program features guest choreographers Ginger Cox, Iquail Shaheed, and Emily Bufferd, in addition to multilevel adult students from all styles of open dance classes across the city. The three shows run Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 3pm and 7pm.
