BWW Review: The Intimate DRACULA at Carmine Boutique Provides Powerful, Personal Thrills

'Blood is too precious a thing to be spilled,' the titular character says in the production of DRACULA playing at Carmine Boutique in Orlando through October 15th. Directed by Jeremy Seghers, this ensemble piece by playwright Steven Dietz brings to life Bram Stoker's classic characters with intimate specificity that brings the story's inherent horror home in ways far more personal than in most films and adaptations of the same source material. While the production includes a requisite level of blood, the most haunting terrors that it supplies are born not of traditional Halloween fear, but of the strains on the relationships between the characters and the people that they hold most dear.

BWW Review: Seattle Public Theater's Blisteringly Intense ON CLOVER ROAD

Hang with me here, Dear Readers, as there are only a few things I can tell you about Seattle Public Theater's current production of 'On Clover Road' lest I give away any surprises. In fact when I arrived to the theater the management asked me not to open the press packet they gave me to keep the secrets from me before I saw it. But I'll do my best. Let's see, I can say that the show is a one act with a run time of about 75 minutes. I can say this blistering thriller is written by the amazing Steven Dietz, author of 'Lonely Planet', 'Becky's New Car', 'Yankee Tavern' and 'Bloomsday' to name just a few. And most importantly I can say that you do not want to miss this one because if you do you'll be missing an incredibly thrilling ride with some of the finest performances I've seen all year.

BWW Feature: Jeremy Seghers Brings to Life a DRACULA You've Never Seen

What does an antique store and vampires have in common? Both will give you the creeps. Walking into Carmine Boutique you would probably look over your shoulder several times as you peruse the shop's collection of skulls and taxidermied items. Carmine Boutique is described as an 'antique, oddities, taxidermy shop with an Edwardian fetish club.' That strange feeling is exactly what Jeremy Seghers felt and immediately sparked the inspiration for producing his immersive staging of DRACULA.
