Playwright Steve Julian dives into the world of transgender acceptance with his new work Ribbon of Life, directed by Alexis Jacknow, SDC. The play depicts Savannah's efforts to get her parents to accept Ezmae, a transgender woman, as her life partner. Under the aegis of the world's largest religion, power and hypocrisy threaten to silence the faithful. The world premiere of a moving new play by KPCC morning host Steve Julian explores the price paid by victims of the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal. What Kind of God? opens on Sept. 14 at the Lillian Theatre.
This play reveals to the very depths the character of Blanche du Bois, a woman whose life has been undermined by her romantic illusions, which lead her to reject-so far as possible- the realities of life with which she is faced and which she consistently ignores. The pressure brought to bear upon her by her sister, with who she goes to live in New Orleans, intensified by the earthy and extremely 'normal' young husband of the latter, leads to a revelation of her tragic self-delusion and, in the end, to madness.

KPCC radio host and playwright/director Steve Julian's 2012 Hollywood Fringe Festival play Altarcations is described as 'pulling from real life stories to reveal the alarmingly darker nature of the church, its hypocrisy in shielding abusive priests, and the wisdom of redemption. Do we really need to see the Catholic church's underbelly, especially when we're inundated by new stories of priest abuse?'
