Mad. Sq. Park to Present Luminous Mischief with Teresita Fernandez & Stephen Petronio Company, 10/30

On Friday, October 30, 2015 from 6:00PM to 7:00PM, Madison Square Park Conservancy will host Luminous Mischief, a free, public performance under artist Teresita Fernandez's Fata Morgana. Fernandez welcomes internationally acclaimed choreographer Stephen Petronio and his company of nine dancers to activate the space of public art with an array of interactions between a citywide assembly of performers and passersby in the Park. Luminous Mischief invites open-ended, free form dance practices into a dynamic public space, blending the power of spontaneous play and the cinematic reflections of pedestrian activity that flicker across Fernandez's artwork. The event will be accompanied by a musical sound score executed by a similarly assembled brass orchestra.

Jacob's Pillow and MASS MoCA to Present Katie Workum & Kimberly Bartosik, 10/24

Cultural partners Jacob's Pillow Dance and MASS MoCA present two innovative and independent New York-based contemporary dance artists, Katie Workum and Kimberly Bartosik, in a one-night-only engagement, October 24 at 8pm at the Hunter Center. Noted for her 'serious and ambitious' work by Gia Kourlas of The New York Times, Katie Workum brings her new work Black Lakes, full of improvisation, risk, and humor. The second half of the program features New York Dance and Performance ('Bessie') Award winner Kimberly Bartosik's Ecsteriority4 (Part 2), which constructs a landscape of power and desire to explore violence in American culture today. Co-presentations by Jacob's Pillow and MASS MoCA are made possible by the Irene Hunter Fund for Dance.

Katrina Lenk, Richard Topol, Lenny Wolpe and More to Star in Yale Rep's INDECENT World Premiere

Yale Repertory Theatre opens its 2015-16 season with the world premiere of INDECENT, a new play with music, written by Paula Vogel, created by Paula Vogel and Rebecca Taichman, and directed by Rebecca Taichman, at the University Theatre (222 York Street), October 2-24. Opening Night is Thursday, October 8. The world premiere of INDECENT is a co-production with La Jolla Playhouse, where it will play November 13-December 10.

ODC Theater to Present RESIDENT ARTISTS UNPLUGGED, 8/30

ODC Theater, one of the West Coast's major centers for contemporary dance and performance, announced today its newest class of resident artists: Gerald Casel, Maurya Kerr, Nicole Klaymoon, and the duo of Sheldon B. Smith and Lisa Wymore. The announcement of these five distinguished artists falls on the ten-year anniversary of ODC Dance Commons, whose upstairs Studio B will serve as venue for a one-night-only event offering a rare and candid look into the creative process of the new resident artists. Titled Resident Artists Unplugged, the event takes place Sunday, August 30 at 6pm.

Fire Island Dance Festival returned for its 21st edition July 17-19, 2015, with some of the most talked-about world-class dance companies, raising a record-breaking $544,555 for Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The New York Dance and Performance Awards (The Bessies), New York City's premier dance awards honoring outstanding creative work in the field, today announced the nominees for the 2014-15 season at its annual press conference. The 37 nominees were selected by the Bessies Selection Committee, an independent committee of 39 dance industry professionals. Produced in partnership with Dance/NYC, Bessie Award categories include Outstanding Production, Outstanding Revival, Outstanding Performer, Outstanding Music Composition or Sound Design, and Outstanding Visual Design. The list of nominations follows. 

San Francisco Girls Chorus Serenades in Free City Hall Concert Tonight

The five-time Grammy Award-winning San Francisco Girls Chorus will give a free public performance tonight, May 28, in the rotunda of San Francisco City Hall to celebrate the legacy of Elizabeth 'Beth' Avakian, who will retire after 32 years as a beloved teacher and SF Girls Chorus School Director in June.

Choreographer Liz Gerring to Receive $25,000 Jacob's Pillow Dance Award

This year's Jacob's Pillow Dance Award, a prestigious honor carrying an unrestricted $25,000 cash prize, will be presented to contemporary choreographer Liz Gerring in recognition of her talent and outstanding contributions to the dance field. Active in the dance world for nearly 20 years, Gerring regularly garners acclaim for her 'enthralling and important' works (Alastair Macaulay, The New York Times) that also 'reveals the dancers as the splendid athletes that they are' (dance critic Deborah Jowitt). Gerring will accept the Award and members of Liz Gerring Dance Company will perform at the Pillow's Season Opening Gala on Saturday, June 20 in the Ted Shawn Theatre. The company will return to perform the evening-length work glacier in the Doris Duke Theatre August 19-23. Previous recipients of the Jacob's Pillow Dance Award include tap artist Michelle Dorrance, the legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham, 2013 MacArthur Fellow Kyle Abraham, and Tony Award winner and director of New York Live Arts Bill T. Jones, among others.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces the 2015-2016 Pittsburgh Dance Council season. The Pittsburgh Dance Council, a division of Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, will explore concepts of age, gender, sexual identity, ethnicity, legacy and historical context during the upcoming season, which opens on Saturday, October 3, 2015.

San Francisco Girls Chorus to Serenade at Free City Hall Concert, 5/28

San Francisco, CA March 16, 2015 - The five-time Grammy Award-winning San Francisco Girls Chorus will give a free public performance Thursday, May 28, in the rotunda of San Francisco City Hall to celebrate the legacy of Elizabeth "Beth" Avakian, who will retire after 32 years as a beloved teacher and SF Girls Chorus School Director in June. During the course of more than three decades, Avakian has been responsible for the music education of thousands of girls and young women. The dedication, inspiration, professional values and joy of music she has inspired in them and their families and friends have influenced their careers in music and other fields and the community. Lyon Opera Ballet to Perform at Meany Hall, 4/16

One of the world's leading contemporary dance companies, The Lyon Opera Ballet is renowned for its vast repertory of work by emerging and established choreographers. The company has acquired and commissioned ballets by a wide range of international dance makers including Jirí Kylían, Nils Christe, Nacho Duato, Trisha Brown, Ralph Lemon, and Bill T. Jones, among others. Anna Kisselgoff of The New York Times hailed Lyon Opera Ballet as “a company full of surprises,” marked by “impressive individuality [and] versatile dancers.” The company returns to Meany Hall with a mixed program: William Forsythe's Steptext (a quartet set to J.S. Bach), Sunshine by Emanuel Gat and Sarabande by Benjamin Millipied.
