New Hampshire Theatre Project Presents ANTIGONE, Now thru 5/27

The NHTP Senior Repertory Company presents Antigone, running tonight, May 18 through May 27, in a translation by Lewis Galantiere from the play by Jean Anouilh, which was adapted from the original Greek play by Sophocles. Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus, is sentenced to execution for burying her dead brother after her uncle, King Creon, declares that his body is to be left for the vultures. The prohibition against desecrating the dead is almost as old as war itself; and recently brought swift punishment to American Marines in Afghanistan.

Lantern Theater Company Closes Season with THE ISLAND, Now thru 6/10

Lantern Theater Company concludes its best-selling season in company history with The Island, a play by renowned South African collaborators Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona, directed by Peter DeLaurier and starring Philadelphia actors Frank X and U.R. A vivid portrayal of apartheid-era struggle and political oppression, The Island is a fitting bookend for a season which started with the provocative religious drama New Jerusalem. The Island runs from tonight, May 17-June 10(press opening: May 23, 7 p.m.).

Gingold Theatrical Group Continues SHAW NEW YORK, 6/2

Gingold Theatrical Group -- which launched its first SHAW NEW YORK festival with a revival of Shaw's comedic masterpiece, MAN AND SUPERMAN, as a co-production with The Irish Repertory Theatre, and directed by GTG Artistic Director David Staller - continues SHAW NEW YORK with a SHAW CRITIC SYMPOSIUM at 2pm and SHAW CONCERT at 8pm - on Saturday, June 2 at The Players Club (16 Gramercy Park South) in Manhattan.

The Flea Theater Mounts Encore of THESE SEVEN SICKNESSES, 6/6-7/1

The Flea Theater presents an encore production of THESE SEVEN SICKNESSES, a 5-hour marathon of all seven of Sophocles' plays re-envisioned by playwright Sean Graney. Directed by Ed Sylvanus Iskandar (a 2012 Drama Desk Award nominee for Outstanding Director -- in his professional directing debut in NYC), the production stars 38 members of The Bats. Performances run June 6 - July 1 at The Flea (41 White Street between Church and Broadway in Tribeca).

Milagro Theatre Presents OEDIPUS EL REY, Now thru 5/26

OEDIPUS EL REY, written by Luis Alfaro and directed by Elizabeth Huffman, is set to take the stage at the Milagro Theatre tonight, May 3 through May 26. Performances will be heeled Thursdays at 7:30PM, Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM and Sundays at 2PM. Tickets will range from $15-$29 and can be purchased at www.milagro.org or 503-236-7253.

THESE SEVEN SICKNESSES Returns to the Flea, 6/6

Due to popular demand, The Flea Theater will bring back THESE SEVEN SICKNESSES this summer. This theatrical adaptation of Sophocles' seven surviving plays (Oedipus, In Trachis, Philoktetes, In Colonus, Ajax, Elektra and Antigone) will return for a limited engagement June 6 through July 1.

JEFF Awards Non-Equity Nominations - Full List and Statistics - Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre Leads with 14 Nominations

The Jeff Awards today announced 124 nominations in 25 categories for Non-Equity Jeff Awards for productions that opened between April 1, 2011, and March 31, 2012. The Non-Equity Awards honor excellence in Chicago theatres not under a union contract. Jeff Awards judges covered opening nights of 154 productions offered by 71 Non-Equity producing organizations. The judges recommended 64 of those shows, making them eligible for Non-Equity Jeff Award nominations. Thirty-two theatre companies received nominations.

Jake Gyllenhaal to Make American Stage Debut in Roundabout's IF THERE IS I HAVEN'T FOUND IT YET This Fall

Roundabout Theatre Company has announced that movie star Jake Gyllenhaal will be making his American stage debut in If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet, a comedic drama by Nick Payne at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre this fall. The play will be directed by Michael Longhurst, with three additional actors and the design team to be announced shortly.
