BWW Review: CAROLINE, OR CHANGE, Playhouse Theatre

Caroline, Or Change tells the story of a maid in Louisiana in 1963. Racial and class tensions form the backdrop, but the show also contains a great deal of joy, humour and sass thanks to a frankly glorious cast led by the inimitable Sharon D. Clarke.

Goldenson Concert Series continues with Tony Award-nominee Sharon McNight in her critically-acclaimed one-woman show "Red Hot Mama - the Sophie Tucker Songbook." This biographical concert, written by McNight, chronicles the life and career of the first lady of show business, whose remarkable career spanned six decades. Sophie Tucker was a consummate performer on stage screen and radio, was part of the Ziegfield Follies early in her career, and in addition to her legendary artistry, was a great humanitarian.

Music director Gregory Nabours led a jingling (ring-ting-tingling too!) evening, featuring Alli Miller (CHERRY POPPINS), Amy Engelhardt (BASTARD JONES), Clent Bowers (B'way: CATS, BIG), Emily Clark (Stealing Focus), Gabriel Gonzalez (La Verdad), Iara Nemirovsky (National tour: SCHOOL OF ROCK), Jeffrey Polk (B'way: FIVE GUYS NAMED MOE), Kelley Dorney (IN A BOOTH AT CHASEN'S), Kristina Miller (JERSEY BOYS), Jonny Lee Jr. and Justin Anthony Long (CITY OF DREAMS), Juan Lozano (2 Cents Theatre Company), Keith and Laura Nicole Harrison (EMOJILAND), Natalia Vivino (CHILDREN OF EDEN at 5-Star Theatricals), and Shawn Ryan ('America's Got Talent'). The evening also showcased a guest performance from the cast of the critically acclaimed Greenway Court production of THE COLOR PURPLE, and, as always, the open mic afterparty! The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, a delightful family story about the true meaning of Christmas, will open at the Lakewood Theatre Company today, December 14 at 7:30 PM. Performances continue on December 15, 16,  and 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 at 7:30 PM. There will also be matinee performances at 2:00 PM on Saturday Dec. 15, Sunday Dec. 16, Saturday Dec. 22 and Sunday Dec. 23. After the opening night performance on Dec. 14, there will be a hot cocoa and cookie reception.
