BWW Reviews: JOEY ARIAS Presents A Sympatico Centennial Tribute to Billie Holiday at Lincoln Center's American Songbook

Vocalist Joey Arias is not what he appears to the uninitiated. This is not a drag performer executing pastiche, but rather an artist serious about music with the talent to offer a full-blooded show. Lifelong affinity for Billie Holiday first professionally surfaced in 1987's Recording Arias on Holiday and continued with the Off-Broadway run of Strange Fruit, an homage to the icon. Her concert Wednesday night for Lincoln Center's American Songbook series, with evocative musical arrangement by Matt Ray, brings Arias' devotion "all the way from downtown above 14th Street."

CHIAROSCURO AND CHUMS to Play Ware Center, 3/11

The Ware Center presents a premiere performance that brings music, humor, dance, and visual art together for one beautiful masterpiece titled, Chiaroscuro and Chums, on Wednesday, March 11 at 7:30 pm. Chiaroscuro is certainly not an everyday word but a great descriptor of what we can look forward to on stage. An Italian word for light-dark, Chiaroscuro is the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition. Friends, “Chums” will join together to bring us an never-before-seen performance entertaining our eyes and ears, with pieces that explore opposites taking us from serious to humorous, and beyond.
