Studio East and StoryBook Theater have four shows sure to delight a variety of theater goers this winter. The youngest audiences, and their parents, will enjoy a touring production of StoryBook Theater's 55-minute fun and colorful musical, JACK & THE BEANSTALK. Studio East presents to our older audiences the heroic adventure, THE ODYSSEY, Shakespeare's COMEDY OF ERRORS, and the tongue-in-cheek rock musical, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. A love of theater can never be started too early or nurtured enough - scroll down for a sneak peek at the shows!

Cleveland Play House Hosts LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS Blood Drive Today

The upcoming Cleveland Play House (CPH) production of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS mixes the beats of Motown with the quirkiness of B-movies, while following the power-hungry plant (Audrey II) in its lyrical and hysterical quest for blood. In a similar vein (pun intended), CPH is sponsoring a blood drive with Lifeshare Community Blood Services in support of National Blood Donor Month. Interested donors may come to the Allen Theatre at Playhouse Square (1407 Euclid Avenue) any time from Noon - 4 p.m. today, January 14th.

BWW Review: The Gamm's GRIZZLY MAMA One to Miss

GRIZZLY MAMA, by George Brant, was written in 2011 at the beginning of the inevitable downswing of the stranglehold Sarah Palin seemed to have on media at the time, and though the program clearly states that any resemblance of the characters in GRIZZLY MAMA to real people is mere coincidence, that's obviously as tongue-in-cheek as the play itself is trying to be. Perhaps this was effective when it first premiered, but the passage of time has eroded the stings and barbs of this satire leaving is as more of a dark comedy without the comedy.  With the ludicrous coverage of the coming 2016 election in everyone's face, a play like this just doesn't have any teeth, and it comes off as almost too safe.

BWW Review: New York Opera in 2015 - Gifts that Keep on Giving

No more carping about out-of-tune singing (for the rest of 2015). No more bemoaning opera directors who don't seem to like the art of opera (for the next five minutes). No more worrying whether traditional opera will go the way of all flesh (for the next few days, at least). It's time to give up on my Scrooge tendencies and be thankful for the gifts that opera gave me, in and around New York this past year, alphabetically speaking.

BWW Review: THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWBOY Return to STERLING'S

When Faith Prince and Jason Graae first performed their show The Prince and the Showboy at Sterling's Upstairs at the Federal in June, 2012, I wrote, '...there were enough sparks to set Sterling's Upstairs at the Federal on fire as Jason Graae and Tony Award winner Faith Prince seized the stage with the premiere of their new show The Prince and the Showboy to an adoring packed house. Graae's inimitable sarcasm and overdone delivery along with Prince's unique pauses and double takes made for a delicious evening of comedy through song as they focused on what makes them click as a team, namely the fun side of life'. Well, the show played 54 Below in New York and has returned to the Federal - December 27 and 28 for two nights only. It's now about 20 minutes longer, bringing it in at 90 minutes and allowing each of the stars to concentrate more fully on dramatic career transitions, especially for Prince.
