An Iliad is a modern-day retelling of Homer's classic. Poetry and humor, the ancient tale of the Trojan War and the modern world collide in this captivating theatrical experience. The Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation announced its 2018 grants in The Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation's Women Playwrights Commissioning Program. These grants fund commissions for female playwrights at selected theaters nationwide. The 2018 recipients are:
Children's Theatre Company (CTC) announced today the appointment of Matt Giles as the organization's new General Manager. Giles served as the Associate Producing Director for Seattle Repertory Theatre and Artistic Producer of Public Works Seattle.
Irish author Conor McPherson's play The Seafarer is a black comedy set over the course of a long evening of family, friends, and drink one Christmas Eve in Dublin. The play centers on James "Sharky" Harkin, who has recently returned to Dublin and moved in with his older, quarrelsome sibling Richard. As guests drop by, drinks start to flow, stories are retold, and secrets begin to emerge as Sharky has to deal with one friend who seems to be staying on permanently, rather than return home to his own family, and another who is now the partner of his ex-wife, and with whom, annoyingly, he seems very happy.
GHOSTLIGHT RECORDS has announced the release of Hundred Days, the original cast recording of the critically acclaimed new musical, on CD in stores and online today, Friday, November 30. The unique album was recorded with a live studio audience that captures the excitement and emotion of the original production. It was released in streaming and digital formats earlier this season. Hundred Days features a book by The Bengsons and Sarah Gancher, music and lyrics by The Bengsons, and was directed by Anne Kauffman with movement direction by Sonya Tayeh. Before there was "Hamilton" there was "In the Heights". I know I'm a nerd, but it floors me how many people don't know that. Most theater aficionados know of "Hamilton" and by extension of Lin-Manuel Miranda but have a blind spot for "In the Heights" the Tony winning show that put Miranda on the map. And while it certainly feels like an early work from the man who would become King, it's still quite stunning and ground breaking for its time and the production from the Seattle Rep manages to capture all the heat and heart that the show demands.
Based on the sweeping, internationally best-selling novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns is the tale of the unlikely connection that blossoms between two Afghan women in war-torn Kabul. As rockets shriek down from the heavens, the friendship of Laila and Mariam develops into an iron-bound rapport, forged by their defiance of a life of senseless tyranny. Secrets, lies, and pacts are made in this harrowing yet ultimately beautiful piece about the true cost of sacrifice. The show played at Seattle Rep through November 10. Playwrights Horizons (Artistic Director Tim Sanford, Managing Director Leslie Marcus) will, from today, November 12, through Thursday, November 15, accept entries for the Live for Five online lottery, giving out $5 tickets to the New York premiere production of Noura, from 9 Parts of Desire playwright and actor Heather Raffo and director Joanna Settle. The Washington Post deemed this "epic-feeling, nearly searing portrait of a woman torn between cultures and family" the "best premiere of the Women's Voices Theater Festival" when it made its world premiere in Washington, D.C. earlier this year. Produced in association with Shakespeare Theatre Company, it will be performed at Playwrights Horizons from November 27 to December 30. Playwrights Horizons created Live for Five in 2007 as part of their Arts Access program to reach out to those who may not be able to afford the cost of a full-price theater ticket. Since its inception, over 3,000 theatergoers have been able to attend the theater thanks to the initiative.
