Grant Gershon Conducts World Premiere For L.A. Chamber Orchestra 5/19-20

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra's (LACO) 50th Anniversary season concludes with guest conductor Grant Gershon leading the world premiere of Derrick Spiva Jr.'s From Here A Path, the second part of a trilogy for chamber orchestra, and Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-Flat Major, featuring noted cellist and classical music innovator Joshua Roman, today, May 19, 8 pm, at Glendale's Alex Theatre, and Sunday, May 20, 2018, 7 pm, at Royce Hall.  In addition, Concertmaster Margaret Batjer leads from the first chair both Vivaldi's Concerto Grosso in D Minor, the first work ever performed when LACO launched 50 years ago, and Mozart's Symphony No. 39 in E-Flat Major, which wraps the Orchestra's exploration this season of the composer's final three symphonies.  Spiva, describing his work, says, "From Here A Path draws inspiration from Husago, a West African piece from Ghana's Ewe people that includes drumming, dancing and singing, kaval flute playing from Eastern Europe and elements of Hindustani classical music.  The title references the momentum and resistance one gathers to reach a point."

L.A. Chamber Orchestra Adds Lee Chu And Anne-Marie Spataru To Board Of Directors

Lee Chu (Brentwood), an investment analyst, and Anne-Marie Spataru (West L.A.) who enjoyed a 30-year-career in project management with the UCLA Capital Programs Department, have been appointed to three-year terms on the Board of Directors of Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO), one of the nation's leading orchestras, announced Executive Director Scott Harrison. LACO is renowned for its wide-ranging repertoire, adventurous commissioning initiatives and commitment to the Los Angeles community.

Harry Bicket Leads LA Chamber Orch's Baroque Conversations; Santa Monica Added

Staff Expansion At L.A. Chamber Orchestra Includes Promotions And Appointments

Lacey Huszcza and Kate Kammeyer, two Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) senior staff members, have been promoted to key new positions, further expanding and strengthening the Orchestra's leadership structure, according to LACO Executive Director Scott Harrison.  Huszcza was named Associate Executive Director, and Kammeyer was promoted to General Manager.  New to LACO's staff is Julia Paras, appointed Director of Advancement and Leadership Giving.  Assuming growing roles in new full-time posts are previously part-time LACO employees Marika Suzuki, who has become a full-time Marketing Assistant, and Alana Miles, who takes on a full-time role as Marketing & Events Assistant.

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, celebrating its roots in the film and television recording industry, presents LACO @ the Movies: Buster Keaton's The General, featuring Emmy Award-winning composer Jeff Beal (House of Cards) conducting the world premiere of his score for the 1926 silent classic spotlighting the absurdity of war on Saturday, November 11, 2017, 8 pm, at The Theatre at Ace Hotel, in downtown Los Angeles. Currently celebrating its 50th anniversary, LACO was founded in 1968 as an artistic outlet for the recording industry's most gifted musicians. The Orchestra, regarded as one of the world's premier chamber orchestras as well as a pacesetter in presenting wide-ranging repertoire and adventurous commissions, performs live to The General for this entertaining evening. Considered among the greatest films ever made, the historical parody was adapted from The Great Locomotive Chase and is set during the Civil War. The Theatre at Ace Hotel was built in 1927, just a year after The General was made.

BWW Review: WIDOWERS' HOUSES at Washington Stage Guild

DC's little jewel, known as the Washington Stage Guild (WSG), has always presented pieces that you can't see elsewhere in the area. With its current offering Widowers' Houses, WSG gives area theatregoers a chance to see a lesser known work by esteemed playwright George Bernard Shaw. While this script is not a center piece of Shaw's canon (a la Pygmalion or Heartbreak House) WSG, true to form, delivers a high-end production of it featuring a top-notch group of performers.

Washington Stage Guild Kicks off the 2017-18 Season with WIDOWERS' HOUSES

The Washington Stage Guild will begin its 32nd season with Widowers' Houses, the first play written by George Bernard Shaw as he set out to shake up the British theatre. Published in 1893, the comedy is still amazingly topical in 2017, and especially in a gentrifying city like Washington.

L.A. Chamber Orchestra Receives Historic $1.5 Million Gift For Principal Oboe Chair

=Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO), currently celebrating its 50th anniversary season, received a $1.5 million gift, the largest in the Orchestra's history, from philanthropists Carol and Warner Henry, who have championed the Orchestra and consistently been among its top donors since the early 1970s, it was announced by Executive Director Scott Harrison.  The extraordinary gift endows the Principal Oboe Chair, to be titled the "Allan Vogel Chair, endowed by the Henry Family," which is named in honor of Allan Vogel, who served as LACO's much beloved Principal Oboe for 44 years until his retirement in June 2016. 

L.A. Chamber Orchestra Announces New Board Members & Other Board Moves

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, celebrating its 50th anniversary during the 2017-18 season, appoints two new Board of Directors members, extends the terms of its President and Chair and elects two new officers, it was announced by Executive Director Scott Harrison.  Terms for President Dana Newman (Altadena), the board's presiding officer, and Chair K. Eugene Shutler (Santa Monica) are extended by one year.  Newly elected officers are Leslie Lassiter, Vice President and President Elect (Beverly Hills), and Shaheen Nanji, Secretary (Pacific Palisades).  

Newly Appointed Principal Bass and Horn Announced by L.A. Chamber Orchestra

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO), one of the nation's premier orchestras as well as a leader in presenting wide-ranging repertoire and adventurous commissions, appoints David Grossman as Principal Bass and Michael Thornton as Principal Horn, announces LACO's Executive Director Scott Harrison.  Both begin their new posts immediately and will also continue in their current positions.  Grossman is Bass with the New York Philharmonic, which he joined as its youngest member in 2000, and Thornton is Principal Horn of the Colorado Symphony.
