One Flea Spare: An Honorable Defeat at the Strand

I like a theater of ideas as much as the next reviewer, but found that, in this somewhat trackless waste of a play, the ideas were either inarticulately expressed, trite, or both. The Strand Theater Company, dedicated to providing opportunities for female artists, writers, designers and directors, certainly fills a need. I only wish I could recommend this offering.

From the award-winning author of The Storytelling Ability of a Boy and Women Who Steal, The Cha-Cha of a Camel Spider asks the questions, what happens when our 'soldiers of fortune' outnumber our army troops and can art really make a difference in a corporatized world? The Tank Presents THE UMBRELLA PLAYS 3/31-4/10

After a sold-out and critically acclaimed run at The New York International Fringe Festival, the award-winning The Umbrella Plays is back, for a limited engagement at The Tank, March 31st - April 10th.

THE UMBRELLA PLAYS Set for Limited Run at The Tank, 3/31-4/10

Written by Stephanie Janssen and directed by Daniel Talbott (art. dir. Rising Phoenix Rep, Keep Your Baggage With You (at all times)), The Umbrella Plays connects six snap-shot-sized plays, each offering a glimpse into the lives of a disparate (and sometimes desperate) cast of characters, as they work their ways through inclement weather of the literal and figurative variety, searching for shelter in whatever form it can be found. The smallest and most common-place of objects, the simple umbrella, becomes the entry point into these stories, reminding us that there is more than meets the eye in the most innocuous-seeming pieces of a life, and the most fleeting of moments. Storms crash in and leave their marks, lovers are sought and lost and found again, ambitions jump the tracks and hopes get renewed, and in the swirl of these six stories, an umbrella is never, ever just an umbrella.

Star Spotlight: Reed Birney, The Dream of the Burning Boy

Q: How did you get started in acting? A: I was one of those freakish kids who always knew that this was what I wanted to do. I remember being five and saying to a group of grown-ups that I wanted to be an actor and they all chortled as they looked at each other. Probably in horror. There was maybe a week I wanted to be a fireman.
