Matt Manuel was born and raised in Detroit, MI, 'the heart of Motown.' He got his start as a competitive gymnast. When he was 13, he had to quit gymnastics, which he says broke his heart. His mother convinced him to try a piano lesson while his brother took a voice lesson. The teacher accidentally switched their lessons, which made Manuel realize he could sing. He studied theatre in high school, but once in college, focused more on vocal performance, so he would be classically trained. He was a contestant on season 13 of AMERICAN IDOL, which jump started his career. Since then, he has never stopped working. Manuel plays Marvin Gaye in MOTOWN THE MUSICAL. I had the chance to speak with him while MOTOWN recently had a tour stop in Boston, MA.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art's marble sculpture Adam by Tullio Lombardo (ca. 1455-1532) returned to public view late last fall following a 12-year conservation project, presented in a special exhibition in the Museum's new Venetian Sculpture Gallery. Adam is now the focal point of this permanent gallery, in a niche inspired by its original location in a monumental tomb in Venice. The creation of this new space has encouraged the curatorial reassessment of the Met's sculpture collection from this period. Tullio's statue is joined by an exquisitely carved Saint Catherine of Alexandria by Cristoforo Solari (ca. 1460-1524), specially acquired for this gallery, and a newly conserved masterpiece by Tullio's father, Pietro Lombardo, a Madonna and Child, whose attribution to Pietro was sometimes questioned in the past and that, as a consequence, has spent several decades in storage.
Last night, Shakespeare & Company presented the world premiere of Mother of the Maid, a powerful and wry drama by Emmy award-winning writer, producer and director Jane Anderson, starring Founding Artistic Director Tina Packer, directed by Matthew Penn, and Broadwayworld's Stephen Sorokoff was on the scene. Check out pics from the evening below!
The Metropolitan Museum of Art's marble sculpture Adam by Tullio Lombardo (ca. 1455–1532) will return to public view on November 11, 2014-July 2015, following a tragic accident in 2002 and an unprecedented 12-year conservation project. It is the first life-sized nude marble statue since antiquity and the most important Italian Renaissance sculpture in North America. Tullio carved Adam in the early 1490s for the monumental tomb of doge Andrea Vendramin, now in the church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Venice, and it is the only signed sculpture from that iconic monument.
