The continued proliferation of rhythmless music plunges Fall For Dance 2019's Program 1 into a miasma of middling potpourri. From Kyle Abraham rendering Misty Copeland into a sterile robot to Crystal Pite's droning narration, this was an evening sorely in need of inventive rhythm and grooves. Thank goodness then for the visiting South Africans of Vuyani Dance Theatre.

DANCE NOW announces the lineup for the 2019 Festival ENCORE! The one-night-only performance will feature the 10 choreographers/companies selected by the DANCE NOW producers for having most successfully met the 2019 DANCE NOW Challenge: to create a clear and complete artistic statement in five minutes or less for the specifics of the stage at Joe's Pub. This year's Challenge winner is Nicole Vaughan-Diaz. As the Challenge winner, Vaughan-Diaz will receive a $1,500 stipend and a weeklong creative residency at DANCE NOW Silo on Kirkland Farm in Bucks County, PA. The ENCORE! program will be hosted by Deborah Lohse (aka TruDee).
Music of Remembrance (MOR) opens its 22nd season with world premieres of two pathbreaking works: Ryuichi Sakamoto's Passage and Shinji Eshima's Veritas. MOR will unveil these timely works as part of its program on Sunday, November 3 at 4:00 p.m. at the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall. Today, KAZU shares the 2nd single from forthcoming solo LP Adult Baby, 'Meo.' The result of collaboration with Blonde Redhead bandmate Amadeo Pace, 'Meo' also features synths and piano from Ryuichi Sakamoto, percussion from Deerhoof's Greg Saunier, and flute from Robbie Lee. Minimal instrumentation swells into a climax facilitated by Art Orchestra of Budapest that runs parallel to the lyrical content of the song, confirming KAZU as a full-spectrum artist who is unafraid to use music to reveal her innermost feelings.
