Polish pianist Rafa? Blechacz (pronounced Ra-FAW BLEH-hatch) has been named the recipient of the 2014 Gilmore Artist Award, it was announced today by Daniel R. Gustin, Director of the Irving S. Gilmore International Keyboard Festival. One of the most prestigious honors in music, the Gilmore Artist Award is presented every four years on a non-competitive basis to an exceptional pianist who, regardless of age or nationality, has the potential to sustain a career as a major international concert artist. Mr. Blechacz will receive $300,000 in support of his musical and career goals over the next four years. Previous recipients of the Gilmore Artist Award are Kirill Gerstein (2010), Ingrid Fliter (2006), Piotr Anderszewski (2002), Leif Ove Andsnes (1998), Ralf Gothóni (1994) and David Owen Norris (1991).

Seattle Opera's 50th Anniversary season continues with one of opera's greatest masterpieces, Verdi's Rigoletto. Considered by many to be the “perfect opera,” this tuneful tragedy tells of a tormented funnyman whose quest for vengeance ends up destroying all he holds dear. Fifty years ago, Seattle Opera produced Rigoletto as part of its first full season; in the decades since, Rigoletto's “La donna è mobile” has penetrated American pop culture and has appeared in everything from a Doritos Super Bowl commercial to an episode of Star Trek: Voyager and Elmo's World on Sesame Street. Now, Seattle Opera revives its popular 2004 production set in Mussolini's Italy and featuring several leading Italian artists. The show opens on January 11, 2014, and runs for seven performances through January 25.

The Jewish Museum will present Gustafer Yellowgold, a concert for families featuring award-winning illustrator/songwriter Morgan Taylor, on Sunday, December 15 at 2 pm. Taylor developed the Gustafer Yellowgold experience as equal parts pop rock concert and minimally animated movie. A storyteller with a comedic bent, Taylor has dreamed up a world of catchy and original story-songs about Gustafer (a friendly guy from the sun who landed in the Minnesota woods), performed alongside a large screen displaying vividly colored animations with karaoke-style subtitles. Gustafer resides in a cottage with his menagerie of friends, including his pet eel; Slim, a tuxedo-wearing pterodactyl best friend; and a dragon named Asparagus who inhabits the fireplace and loves corn on the cob.
Ben Rudnick & Friends will perform a Hanukkah concert for families at The Jewish Museum on Sunday, December 1 at 2:00pm, blending musical styles from country to bluegrass, to rock and second-line New Orleans jazz. Families can hear original songs from Rudnick's award-winning albums as well as twists on such Hanukkah classics as 'I Have a Little Dreidel' and 'Oh Chanukah, Oh Chanukah.' Four prizes will be presented at the Foundation's Annual Awards Concert and Benefit at 7:30pm on Monday, November 25, 2013 at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall. The event will feature CRF Young Artist of the Year pianist Roman Rabinovich performing selections from his CD Ballets Russes (Orchid; March 2013), pianist Laura Leon performing works by CRF Composer of the Year Peter Schickele's album The Music of Peter Schickele, Samuel Sanders Collaborative Artists Award winners Hsin-Yun Huang and Sarah Rothenberg in selections from their recording Viola Viola (Bridge; November 2012); andClassical Recording Foundation Award winner, cellist Sophie Shao, performing selections from her upcoming double-CD set of J.S. Bach's Cello Suites. The proceeds from the 2013 Classical Recording Foundation Award Ceremony and Benefit will go toward the 2014 Awards.
