Tonight, June 29, pianist Vladimir Khomyakov, silver medal winner of the 2013 Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition, will perform Prokofiev's famous Piano Concerto No. 3 alongside the Houston Symphony as part of the ExxonMobil Summer Symphony Nights Series at Miller Outdoor Theatre. The concert will also feature the popular Overture to Verdi's La Forza del Destino and Brahms' Symphony No. 1. Making his Houston Symphony debut, young conductor Aziz Shokhakimov has received international acclaim as a talented young conductor, leading European orchestras and earning top honors at festivals and competitions.
Stage One, the charity that supports new UK theatre producers and productions, has just announced the latest recipient to receive its Start-Up Investment Fund. Gavin Kalin has been awarded £30,000 by the charity to co-produce the West End transfer of the critically-acclaimed Young Vic production of A Doll's House. He will co-produce alongside the Young Vic, Mark Rubinstein and Neil Laidlaw. The production will open at the Duke of York's Theatre in August 2013 and will see Hattie Morahan reprising her award-winning role of Nora Helmer with Dominic Rowan playing Torvald.
The New York Philharmonic will present A Dancer's Dream: Two Works by Stravinsky, a multidisciplinary, theatrical reimagining of the ballets The Fairy's Kiss and Petrushka, created by Giants Are Small. The Deer Valley Music Festival, summer home of Utah Symphony | Utah Opera, is celebrating ten years of music in the mountains with a festival lineup that highlights the diversity of the orchestra and its audience. The 2013 Festival features seventeen performances from June 29 to August 10 at venues in Park City, Utah, including ten performances at Deer Valley Resort's Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheatre which was recently highlighted by CNN as one of eight 'amazing' outdoor concert venues. The first three Festival events will take place on June 29, July 5 and July 6.
Today in 1977, Pippin closed at the Minskoff Theatre, after having played 1944 performances. Pippin is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Roger O. Hirson. Bob Fosse, who directed the original Broadway production, also contributed to the libretto. The musical uses the premise of a mysterious acting troupe, led by a Leading Player, to tell the story of Pippin, a young prince on his search for meaning and significance. The original cast included: Eric Berry, Jill Clayburgh, Leland Palmer, Irene Ryan, Ben Vereen, and John Rubinstein.
