Ann Arbor's Penny Seats Theatre Company significantly expands summer offerings Ann Arbor's Penny Seats Theatre Company is set to open its fifth--and biggest--summer season at West Park, performing outdoor professional theatre for just $10 (or less) per ticket, on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (and one Sunday) throughout July and August. This year, the group takes up residence at the park for six weeks, performing two blockbuster comedies: The Complete Works of William Shakespeare [Abridged], by Adam Long, Daniel Singer, and Jess Winfield, and Urinetown: The Musical! by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis.
Through the month of October, The Penny Seats enjoyed a sold-out run of the musical revue Tomfoolery, celebrating the words and music of satirist, mathematician, and cult favorite, Tom Lehrer, at Ann Arbor's Conor O'Neill's Irish Pub and Restaurant, 318 South Main Street, Ann Arbor. The two companies have partnered to offer this cabaret-style show, with dinner seatings available starting around 6:00 pm, and performances at 8:00pm. Due to high demand, an additional performance date has been added: November 9.
Musical Tom Foolery will be performed at Conor O'Neills by Ann Arbor's The Penny Seats the first four Thursdays, beginning today, Oct 2 and running through the 23rd.
The Penny Seats return to the stage this October with the musical revue Tomfoolery, celebrating the words and music of satirist, mathematician, and cult favorite, Tom Lehrer. The production also includes an opening short—a 5-minute mini-musical called Volcanoes!!—composed by Ann Arbor's Zach London, who cites Lehrer as an early inspiration.

These words rang in my ears the other week when I crashed a rehearsal of The Penny Seats' summer production Elektra (as adapted by Ann Arbor's own Anne Carson) for a sneak peek of the glorious mayhem that is sure to delight audiences at the West Park Band Shell July 10 - 26.
On April 26th, Roy Sexton held a book-signing/Q&A for his new book Reel Roy Reviews, Vol. 1: Keepin' It Real. With references to forgotten Broadway musicals and even more forgotten films (Buckaroo Banzai or Time Bandits, anyone?), analysis of his ongoing “war” with the Cher-army, many funny asides, boffo binge-book-buying by all in attendance, and a whole lot of zany fun, yesterday's book signing/singing event was a hit!
Local author Roy Sexton's first book Reel Roy Reviews, Vol. 1: Keepin' It Real was released last month and quickly found itself among Amazon's 'hot releases,' even hitting number one on the site's list of top-selling 'Guides and Reviews.'

In Susie Duncan Sexton's follow-up to Secrets of an Old Typewriter, she offers her second essay collection of provocative, funny, and heartwarming/heartbreaking observations. Entitled Misunderstood Gargoyles & Overrated Angels, this volume celebrates the underdogs and the unappreciated among us... and sets its sights on the hypocritical and the hyped among us as well. Through the context of a life fully lived-with an affinity for pop culture, an aversion to small town small-mindedness, and a passion for animal rights-Susie weaves a rich tapestry of punditry and advocacy.
On Today, September 15, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., author Susie Duncan Sexton will read from her book 'Secrets of an Old Typewriter' as part of the Ann Arbor Arts and Culture Series. She will be joined by son Roy Sexton who, accompanied by pianist Rebecca Biber, will offer a selection of his mom's favorite show tunes. This presentation will be held at the Ann Arbor Senior Center at 1320 Baldwin Avenue, $5 general admission or $4 for guests 60 years and older. To reserve your tickets, please call 734-794-6250, and for more info, including maps to the center, visit www.a2gov.org/government/communityservices/ParksandRecreation/seniors/.

The Penny Seats' summer musical 'Little Me' opened this past weekend on July 11th. The production is set to run for two more weekends (July 18-20 & 25-27). Check out a first look below!
Now in its third year of operation, Ann Arbor's Penny Seats Theatre Company is set to produce its trademark summer show at the West Park Band Shell, 215 Chapin Street in Ann Arbor for three weekends from today, July 11 through July 27.
The Penny Seats third annual summer show at Ann Arbor's West Park opens on July 11th. This year, the troupe is proud to present Little Me, the farcical autobiography of Belle Poitrine, supposed star of stage, screen, and sinking ship. From her humble origins as Belle Schlumpfert on Drifter's Row, to her meteoric rise to wealth, culture, and social position, to her many mates and her one true love, all are here. Neil Simon's script is a scream (yes, Neil Simon wrote a musical!), and the music by Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh sparkles. Better still, Penny Seat Roy Sexton will attempt a comic tour de force originated by Sid Caesar and designed just for this show: he will play no fewer than six characters. Check out a first look at the cast below!
