The San Diego Opera's production of Daniel Catan's Florencia en el Amazonas was premiered Saturday at San Diego's Civic Center. Much has been made of the influence the magical realism of Nobel-Prize winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez had on Marcela Fuentes-Berain's libretto, but most of the magic is in Catan's music. In this production, the voices and staging added another helping of enchantment. What little magical realism there is in the libretto, compared to Marquez's inventive, often disorienting novels, was largely lost in the mix.

The Verdi Chorus celebrates its 35th anniversary with its Spring 2018 concert The Force of Destiny for two performances only at the First United Methodist Church in Santa Monica on April 28 and 29 led by Founding Artistic Director Anne Marie Ketchum. Plácido Domingo, LA Opera's Eli and Edythe Broad General Director, has announced final details about the company's spring presentation of Christoph Willibald Gluck's landmark masterpiece, Orpheus and Eurydice, which will be conducted by James Conlon, the company's Richard Seaver Music Director. The new production, created by LA Opera in collaboration with Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Hamburg Staatsoper, is directed, choreographed and designed by John Neumeier and will feature the entire company of the Joffrey Ballet, one of the world's great dance companies.

The Queen Esther's Dilemma, a musical by Samuel J. Bernstein, is inspired by the Biblical Book of Esther. This original musical play blends humor with anguish, tragedy with triumph, while exploring Jewish identity in all its complexities. This unique musical will open on March 1st at the Center for Jewish History, New York, for a total of 4 performances (March 1st, 4th, 13th and 18th).

Spamilton, the comedic musical take on all things Hamilton and Broadway, opened last night at its new home at the 47th Street Theater/The Puerto Rican Traveling Theater. The new theater on 47th Street, which is just a block from its inspiration and main punchline, hosts the show for an open engagement.

In its 2016 - 2017 season, New York City Opera presented the New York staged premiere of Rachmaninoff's Aleko, the New York premiere of Tobin Stokes's Fallujah, 10 sold-out performances of Bernstein's Candide, the modern-day revival of Respighi's La Campana Sommersa, and the American premiere of Antonio Literes's Baroque rarity Los Elementos. This June, New York City Opera concludes the season with the eagerly anticipated New York premiere of Peter Eotvos's Angels in America, based on the play by Tony Kushner.

The show's move to Off Broadway puts it just a stone's throw from the theater housing its inspiration and main punchline. The show is set for an open engagement.

Madison Opera has announced the company's 2017/18 season, which feature a classic opera and two Madison Opera premieres.  The season opens in November with Bizet's Carmen, followed by Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio in February, and Catán's Florencia en el Amazonas in April.
