Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company announces the run of Roger Guenveur Smith's 'deeply moving' (The New York Times) Rodney King, an electrifying solo show that explores the legacy of a complex historical American icon. Smith, a celebrated artist noted for his performances in Spike Lee films such as Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X, was last at Woolly in 1996 with his stirring solo performance piece, A Huey P. Newton Story. A part of The Capital Fringe Festival, all tickets to this limited two-week engagement of Rodney King will be $35.
"The Tallest Tree in the Forest", A Play with Music written and performed by Daniel Beaty, is being directed by Moises Kaufman in its World Premiere production at Center Theatre Group's Mark Taper Forum at the Music Center in Los Angeles. Long Beach Opera's offbeat double bill provides two iconic American takes on Igor Stravinsky's whimsical, neoclassical theater piece L'Histoire du Soldat. Composed in 1918, Stravinsky's original score was set to Ferdinand Ramuz's version of a Russian folktale about a soldier in pursuit of a princess and a treasure who is conned by the Devil.

Performances begin this Saturday for the DouglasPlus repertory of three of Los Angeles' hottest solo theatre artists, Luis Alfaro, Trieu Tran and Roger Guenveur Smith, at the Center Theatre Group/Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City.
Three of Los Angeles' hottest solo theatre artists will be presented in DouglasPlus this September, and audience members will be able to see all three shows for a total of only $60.
Three world premieres, seven productions in all, are scheduled for the 10th season at the Douglas. The works range from a new rock musical to a sweeping new drama to a masterful interpretation of the works of Beckett, plus the bonus option of The Second City's one-of-a-kind Christmas show. In addition, three Los Angeles solo artists will be presented in the popular DouglasPlus program, and will represent CTG in the Radar L.A. festival.
