Review - Lost In The Stars
by Ben Peltz - Feb 5, 2011

In April of 1949, Rodgers and Hammerstein shocked the Theatre World by writing a song for their new musical professing that humans developed racial prejudice by nurture and not by nature.  Later that same year, a scene in the new musical by Maxwell Anderson and Kurt Weill showed two racially different young boys innocently striking up a quick friendship, unaware of why anyone would object.

Review - Gruesome Playground Injuries: Glad To Be Unhappy
by Ben Peltz - Feb 4, 2011

The New York stage is often a haven for self-destructive couples on display, but rarely is that self-destruction so bluntly in view as in Rajiv Joseph's intriguing Gruesome Playground Injuries.  The work of this imaginative playwright, who'll be making his Broadway debut later this season with his Pulitzer finalist, A Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, grows more interesting with each new piece to hit town and director Scott Ellis' darkly funny Second Stage production is terrifically unsettling.

Luker and McGillin to Star in WHERE'S CHARLEY? for Encores!
by Robert Diamond - Feb 3, 2011

Rebecca Luker and Howard McGillin will star in Frank Loesser's Where's Charley, the final New York City Center Encores! production of the 2010-11 season, running March 17 - 20. Where's Charley?, based on Brandon Thomas' Charley's Aunt, has a book by George Abbott and music and lyrics by Frank Loesser. It will be directed by John Doyle and choreographed by Alex Sanchez with musical direction by Rob Berman. Where's Charley?, Frank Loesser's first Broadway score, immediately demonstrated the master's easy command of wit and romance, sophistication and high jinks. George Abbott's adaptation of Brandon Thomas' classic college farce Charley's Aunt delivered 'Once in Love With Amy,' 'My Darling, My Darling' and 'The New Ashmolean Marching Song' to the hit parade, and launched Loesser into the songwriting stratosphere. The musical opened at the St. James Theater on October 11, 1948, and played 792 performances. It was directed by George Abbott, choreographed by George Balanchine and starred Ray Bolger, who won a Tony Award for his performance. Where's Charley? will run March 17-20, 2011.
