Tonight, October 4, 2010, the following people were honored with Barrymore Awards at the 16th Annual Barrymore Awards Ceremony at the Walnut Street Theatre.

The 2010 Barrymore nominees have been announced! Created in 1994, The Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre are the Greater Philadelphia region's only comprehensive theatre awards program, recognizing artists for excellence and innovation while serving to increase awareness of the richness of the local theatre community. The Barrymore Awards are a nationally recognized symbol of excellence for theatre in this region, raising the bar for the work produced by local theatres and individual artists, and generating significant coverage in all the local newspapers and in national trade publications.Each year, over 120 shows produced by the region's professional theatres are reviewed by the Barrymore Voters. At the annual awards presentation each Fall, the Barrymore Awards are presented to honor the community's collective achievement. Following its world premiere with the Philadelphia Theatre Company ran in the Kennedy Center Family Theater as part of Terrence McNally's Nights at the Opera, a five-week event featuring three of the playwright's works performed concurrently on three Kennedy Center stages.

Arden Theatre Company will extend the run of Peter Pan through Sunday, January 31, 2010 due to popular demand.

The world premier of Terrence McNally's Golden Age at the Philadelphia Theatre Company is not to be missed. The playwright's personal love of the medium shines through brightly in his newest work. The play takes place on January 24, 1835 backstage at the Italien Opera House in Paris and centers on the composer Vincenzo Bellini at the premier of his I Puritani. This is the third play McNally has written about opera, mixing both historical facts and imagined interactions. While the play lasts almost the length of the opera itself it does not feel tedious but rather allows the audience to truly understand Bellini's emotional state.

The Arden's children theater production of Peter Pan may be for kids, but adults will still be enthused. As a fan and scholar of Peter Pan I was incredibly interested to see this adaptation. Often, children's theater takes classic books and dummies them down for kids to the point where they are barely recognizable. This is not the case in this production.
